TYT TH-9000: Reviews and Notes

This guy (see video) likes his TYT TH-9000. I don't have much interest in 440 or 220, but this doesn't dampen my interest in a 2M version (or the Vero Telecom VR-2200). According to this article, the unit is fairly large - his actual words are "fat piggy size." Lastly, I do know how I missed it, but Ed is selling the 220 version for $224.95. He doesn't say in the description that it is a TH-9000, but one of the comments does.

  1. Advanced Specialties has the TYT TH-9000/V (65W 2 Meter VHF Mobile) listed on their site for $167.88 + $8.99 shipping (48 state). HRO has the KENWOOD
TM-281A (65W 2 Meter VHF Mobile) for $164.95 + free shipping plus the YAESU
    FT-1900R (55W 2 Meter VHF Mobile) for $164.95 + free shipping.

The new TYT is an interesting radio but the price is really not undercutting Kenwood or Yaesu at this point. What does it do that the other's don't? If I was in the market for a good basic 2M mobile radio I would stick with the tried and true K or Y.

I guess I could see the TYT if you had a commercial/business license in the 136-174 and you wanted to use the radio for that, but it's probably not type approved for commercial.

    1. That's also why I think the KG-UV920R needs to be $200ish.

  2. "Fat piggy size"? I think you may have mis-heard me.
The unit in the video is the TH-9000 UHF model (400-490Mhz)
the unit is only a touch wider than my old Uniden UH090
Gets extremely hot if you talk too much on 45W, ans hence I have clocked it back to 25W, and mostly use the Low power mode in this range, as 5W is the legal max on 477 band in Australia.

    1. "Clocked" it back? Is there some kind of timing protocol in the power delivered? Perhaps you mean "reduced to 25W," or the basic, clear, non-jargon "cut it back to 25W," whee that's too easy.

  3. The TYT radio has an advantage over the K's or Y's because you can reprogram the "P" keys to meet your needs for frequently used keys
