Interesting development. I kind of thought that this would be coming from Yaesu after I found their new Digital Radio PDF on their site. On their "Products > VHF/UHF Handhelds" page ( http://yaesu.com/?cmd=DisplayProducts&DivisionID=65&ProdCatID=111 ) you'll find the PDF download. It has information about another new digital amateur standard that's *not* DSTAR. It talks about this other standard in glowing terms. Kind of figured this would be the digital radio that would come out to compete with DSTAR. Is it compatible with DSTAR? Don't know, but I don't think so. Will be interesting to see is this will be a standards war. Yaesu vs. Icom. Another Blu Ray vs. HD/DVD or Betamax vs. VHS. Icom was first to market with DSTAR, but so was HD/DVD and Betamax and they both lost.
Both DSTAR and P25 have baggage, whether it is Intellectual Property (yes, THAT IP) related, limited chipset selection, interoperability or some combination of all three. DMR and TETRA (I think) do not appear to have such issues. Since hams have no interest in trunking, DMR is most likely the target platform. It also seems consistent with the Vertex white paper.
Before the batwing fanboys moan about their 'standard', it isn't. TRBO is an *implementation* of DMR, not the other way around. Don't take my word for it; look it up, just not exclusively at MSI.
Pretty much all digital comms use those damn codecs.
Yaesu's FT-1D is not impressive especially being that the reps at the Hamvention couldn't tell us much about it technically. Just pointed out the features such as the GPS and all, whupty doo.
I would like Yaesu to flesh their new digital spec out more instead of just teasing us annoyingly with an HT that does not work with any other digital system in place, according to one rep that seemed to actually know what P25 is.

DMR still uses DVSI's codecs, don't they?
