Good Idea, Bad Idea

Bad Idea Edition...

We've had samurai sword umbrellas and ENDO worries that it won't be long until a swat team is called because someone sends their kid to school with the neato backpack for the Ruger 10/22 Takedown rifle.

In a world where toy guns, embroidered guns on purses, and plastic lightsabers get the TSA all torn up and
where a few hundred rounds of ammunition, is considered a cache or armory, Wired is showing off an ammo can lunch box. Cue the school lockdown now! (Photo: Ariel Zambelich/Wired)

I've run over 100 miles this month. I will run four more tomorrow. And then on Sunday, I hope to run 26.2.

Baofeng UV-3R: Modification Service

Everyone seems concerned about jobs leaving their countries and moving to low cost regions. Due to the imperfections of the UV-3R, it is creating work for folks outside of Asia...

Frank (DD9UG) has a conversion service for your UV-3R. He will fix the harmonic problem, swap out the LEDs for a color of your choice, or tweak the antenna.

Baofeng UV-3R: Expanded Frequencies 222 MHz

Pat (WA6MHZ) expanded the capability of his UV-3R to include 222 MHz. His results:
Upon measuring the Power Output of the UV-3R+Pus on 223.5, I find the power is greatly reduced, On 2M and 440, I see +33dBM, which is 2W. On 223.5, I only get +12.26dBM, which is pretty lame. That come out to be 0.0168267406W, or roughly 16mW. So there must be some Filters messing with us. But I can hear it in my Kenwood TM-331A mobile rig just fine, so for short simplex it will work. Also to some repeaters where U have a good shot at it. The stock antenna is optimized for 2M & 450 so I need to score a Triband antenna so I have a chance of getting out with the 16 Milliwatts.
RX sensitivity is pretty good. Measured at -119dBM minimum discernable signal.
Measured TX frequency (223.5) 223.4988120 Mhz
So it WORKS on 222, KINDA!
In a follow-up post is a link to an app that will auto-mod your .ini file to open the frequencies. He has successfully used the program with a UV-3R Mark II and a UV-3R + Plus. Head on over to Mark's (VE3PZR) page and check it out.

Instructions:
How to update your UV-3R Mark II to support 220mhz Ham Band
Some models of the radio are able to support a much broader range of frequencies if you store a special memory file into the radio.
Follow these steps:
[1] Install UV-X4 programming software
[2] Run the UV-3R-soft-Modder program to update your UX-X4 software to add some extended Band Plans
[3] If you have an existing memory file, re-run the soft-mod program to change the Band Plan that is embedded inside the .3R memory file.
[4] Load the memory file inside UV-X4 and write the memories to your radio and your radio will now have 220mhz added to your radio!
Tech TIP #1: If you are unable to write a memory file to your radio, power-on while holding down the VOL button. It will reset your radio back to factory and you will be able to write the extended frequency file.
Tech Tip #2: 2 memory files are included. Both files have 220mhz included but during tests with other hams, we found that my radio gave better 220mhz results if we lowered the UHF instead of raising the VHF frequency range. I suggest testing both methods with your radio to verify results.

Baofeng UV-5R: Software v2

Ed at Import Communications has gotten a new version of the UV-5R programming software.  On the UV-5R Yahoo group, he notes that:
The new file has been uploaded to the Files section and also placed on my web
site. It starts in English and does 2.5 kHz frequency entries.
Download is here. The readme file states:
This is version 2 of the programming software for the UV-5R.  If installing over a previous version, you must first remove or rename the file "BF5R_CPS" from your original folder.
Improvements to this software will continue and newer versions will be announced and posted to the UV-5R Yahoo-Group and to the web site www.UV-5R.com as they are received.
73, Ed
www.UV-5R.com
The software installed in a different path than the original version I had. YMMV. I left the radio at work, so I couldn't really test it, but it does open with the menus in English. A step (no pun intended) in the right direction!

TYT TH-9000: Reviews and Notes

This guy (see video) likes his TYT TH-9000. I don't have much interest in 440 or 220, but this doesn't dampen my interest in a 2M version (or the Vero Telecom VR-2200). According to this article, the unit is fairly large - his actual words are "fat piggy size." Lastly, I do know how I missed it, but Ed is selling the 220 version for $224.95. He doesn't say in the description that it is a TH-9000, but one of the comments does.

Garmin 610

A few months ago, I mentioned I was tempted by the Garmin 610 GPS watch for capturing my run data. I broke down and got one off eBay. One big reason is my Android phone is having lots of problems and I did not think I could count on it to work for 4+ hours while I run the marathon next week. I like the watch so far, but I normally wear my watches with the face on the inside of my wrist. The watch is so bulky I really cannot do that with this one.

Decline of Civilization

I was in the local bookstore and noticed this... When "Teen Paranormal Romance" gets its own section, the end is near.

Baofeng UV-5R: Performance

First some good news.. no spurious transmissions on the harmonic (unlike the UV-3R):
"Looking at a scope there is no unwanted 2nd harmonic on 145 MhzJaap (PD0JDG )
And some notes on the power output:
"I measured mine with a Welz wattmeter and a 50 ohm dummy load. I get a little more than 5 watts on both 2 and 440." Brent (WB4SPA)
"I measured power output with digital swr/pwr meter. Maximum Power output is 4watts on both vhf and uhf. I got swr of antenna suppleid with uv5r as, 1;1.5 on 143.000mhz vhf and 1:1.5 on 475.000mhz uhf. And on all other freq swr is more than 2.Puranik (VU3KOD)
And Steve (WB8GRS) has some squelch, sensitivity, and power output measurements.

TYT TH-UV3R: Import Communications

Ed is quickly living up to his new, broader name of Import Communications. He has updated his website with a place holder for the TYT TH-UV3R (or UV-3R - it is listed both ways). The site says coming soon, but no date or price.

Baofeng UV-5R: Alphatags 7 Characters Hack

Six characters not enough for you on your UV-5R display? Despite a limit in the current version of the software, you can manually edit the .dat file and add a seventh character. I recommend adding the first six characters via the software and then only editing the file to change the extra character.

All credit for this hack goes to Szombathely-77 Zoli (http://frekik.hu/) who was kind enough to post this information in a comment. The instructions are here in Hungarian and English!

Chinese Radios - The Center Part II

A commenter on yesterday's post about which Chinese manufacturer is really making all these radios pointed me to this link at Kightradio. (He is the one offering the TYT TH-UV3 for sale.) There are multiple updates on the page:
03/19/12 "The TYT TH-UV3 Dual Band HT is on the way to me now. I will update everyone as soon as I receive them."
So he could have the TYT TH-UV3 any day now. We do live in interesting times.
02/20/2012 "Baofeng UVD-5R Dual Band 4 watt HT was just released for sale in China. This is a nice little Dual Band rig but as of now, the menuis only in Chinese. This is howthe first UV-3R started out and then they made the english menu later. I would like to note that this radio looks exactly like the TYT F8 Radios. In talking with TYT I found out this is a COPY and not a radio made by TYT and sold to Baofeng. TYT has a patent on the case so we will see what TYT does about this later. So if you buy one of these on the internet, BEWARE, its menu is ONLY IN CHINESE and hard to figure out. I have one to test and I am having the menu translated and I will update you later on this.
Dual Band mobiles are not anywhere close to being released. I would not look for them at Dayton this year. Maybe if we are lucky, a few months after Dayton but this is just my personal guess with info I hear in talking with the MFG's every few days."
We know that are now versions of the UV-5R that do Chinese only, Chinese & English, and English only. And he has been told that Baofeng is ripping off TYT's case. More interesting is his claim that the dual band mobiles (KG-UV920R anyone?) won't be available for a few more months.
No Date "We attended the Hong Kong Electronics Fair and the Canton Export Fair Oct 15,2011
We will be updating the site in a few days with all the New Goodies we found at the show. Lots of exciting things in the works so be sure to check back with us and get updated.
We are in China now so if you have any special radios you would like us to purchase for you, contact us and we will be glad to purchase for you.
Call 405-227-9980 (Our time is opposite the USA time so when its 11 am in the US, its 11 pm in China) Please call late evening your time to reach us.
We can get you the latest versions of Wouxun,TYT, Baofeng and others at Hong Kong Prices."
Pretty cool that he offers to ferry radios back from China. Shipping and wire transfers can make a good deal go bad very quickly.
11/11/2011 "Wouxun is going to raise the price effective now of the KG-UVD1p & UVD3 about $22.00 This is because of dealer requests to add 2.5 steps to those models. Its seems more like a move on Wouxun's part to increase the retail price like they have been wanting to do for sometime. They also increased the min wholesale order to 500 units. This is going to put the Wouxun HT's in a higher price class and TYT and others will have the advantage. Hong Kong will have a much lower price and attract more customers. As far as the Dual Band mobile, I would not look for it anytime soon and when it does come out, I am anxious to see the price. Wouxun is not aware of other companies working on Dual Band Radios because they pay little attention to their competition."
Build your brand and demand higher prices. It is the American way!

Chinese Radios - The Center?

The Baofeng UV-3R is a re-branded Vero Telecom UV-3R.

The Vero Telecom VR-2200 is a re-branded TYT TH-9000.

The Baofeng UV-5R (which I cannot find on the Baofeng site) is similar to the TYT TH-F8.

When the UV-3R came out, I thought VeroTelecom was going to be the actual manufacturer - if not the design house, too. The UV-3R was availible as a Baofeng UV-3R, Magiksun UV-3RComtex UV-3R, and a Zastone ZT-UV3R. Vero Telecom was going to be the source.

Now it appears that the VR-2200 is actually a TYT TH-9000. And the UV-5R looks like it has it origins in the TYT TH-F8.

Is TYT going to be the center of the ham radio world for China manufacturers?

Does ICOM buy Yaesu radios and re-brand them? Is Elecraft reselling Ten-Tec rigs? The game is different in China. Maybe they just like to keep us on our toes. I am going to need a map.

There Be Dragons in Knoxville

One my favorite authors, George R.R. Martin, linked to an article about a dragon coming to Knoxville.

And speaking of GRRM and a Game of Thrones... the HBO series is so good, it is leading people to a life of crime (written version, cartoon version).

Baofeng UV-5R: A Rainbow of Screen Colors

We had colorful UV-3R radios, but now we have colorful screens on the UV-5R. Picture via K6FIN as part of his unboxing and review of his UV-5R.

Baofeng UV-5R: Schematics

Via RadioScanner.ru, a direct link to a PDF Schematic of the UV-5R. It is interesting that the file name is F8UV-1846 (bottom right in the drawing). I wonder if the F8 is for the TYT TH-F8 and the UV is for the UV-5R. Just some idle speculation on my part.

iPad Usage

Apparently iPad user purchase patterns are different from other mobile users thus making them more valuable:

"A lot of really good businesses build their business model around getting to 10% conversion rate to purchasers within 6 to 12 months. It’s simply amazing that we’re seeing 10% conversion to purchase within the first week for iPad users.
Second, the Custora model forecasts that iPad users are worth twice as much 2-year revenue vs. non-iPad customers."
And it seems we are learning new ways to use our iPads. With all the "cloud" services, I'm surprised that the demand for more disk space is going up. Perhaps the magic of syncing across devices actually drives the need for more space when all your pictures, videos, apps, and files start showing up on your tablet. I am seriously thinking about an e-ink Kindle to use as a pure e-reader, so the second graph makes sense to me.

Voice-Mail

We have a hundred year old voice-mail system at work. The one feature I really, really want in a new system is for it to automatically delete hang-ups. I get tons of calls everyday from unknown numbers. I suspect they are sales calls, so I don't answer. The calls go to voice-mail. They stay on the line long enough so that I get to hear them typing (or other background conversations when they are in a call center), but then hang-up without really leaving a message.

I want the new system to zap those without me ever having to check them. Do any voice-mail systems do that today?

All Your Device Are Belong to Us

There isn't a ton of technical details to be had in the presentation, but it seems too easy for all of these devices to be hacked/disrupted. I agree that a better user interface on the P25 radio might solve the encryption problem, but I still think people will be one of the weakest links.

(All Your Device Are Belong to US is a reference to this.)

TYT TH-UV3R

The TYT TH-UV3R is getting the once over by the UV-3R group.

Baofeng: Value

From a post by Soxy on the Transmission1 forum:
"if any rep from baofeng monitors this site is'nt it about time you got these radio's right.after the uv-3r mk-1 then the mk-2 and the mk-3 and now the uv-5r there are still major issues.come on get it right and stop ripping your customers off and coming out with useless excuses."
I'm not sure why this bothers me so much. The outrage? The grammar? The lack of specifics (relating to the "useless excuses"? The incorrect model names? The sense of entitlement? The sense of powerlessness?

No one is making this person buy these radios. Most reasonable people understand that, in the real world, there are trade-offs. Pay less, get less. He can't be bothered to use capitalization or do any proof-reading for a few sentences, but someone else better darn well make a perfect product and make it super cheap.

I did not reply on the board as I generally prefer to avoid feeding the trolls. Since logic does not appear to be his strong suit, trying to persuade him with more logic is likely to fail.

Baofeng UV-5R: Picture with the Case Removed

Here is the first picture I have seen of the a UV-5R that has been taken apart. The picture is from Jester316 at the AR15 forum. I'm sure more will follow as others crack open the unit. I wonder if a Waccom version has the BFUV-5R stamp on it.

Baofeng UV-5R: Waccom UV-5R 5W Video

409Shop has put out a video of the Waccom UV-5R. I did not see any difference between the Baofeng and Waccom, but the Waccom is still advertised as 5W. A quick search of the 409Shop site does not show any other Waccom radios - just some accessories that are shared by the Baofeng version.

Hat tip to Nate who let me know about the video.

Baofeng UV-5R: Video - Adding a Repeater to Memory

As a follow-up to the written instructions for adding a repeater into memory, here is a video from gwcfeb03 that demonstrates the procedure.Note,  I changed to the transmitting frequency before going back into menu #27 the second time. It sounds like it took his change, but I would rather see the frequency in the display instead of hoping I keyed it correctly.

Baofeng UV-5R: US Sellers

Chris, NH7QH, has added the UV-5R to his website at HawaiiRadioSales.com, but won't take orders until they have FCC approval - which should be coming soon.

Ed, of ImportCommunications.com, sent out an update saying that he had ordered several hundred UV-5Rs, but there has been a problem with a transfer of the funds. Apparently his money is lost in China, so he's having to work that out.

Wouxun KG-UV920R: Soon? Price?

Matt is hearing rumors that the KG-UV920R is soon to make an appearance. I would think his sources were pretty good. He is also speculating about the price. I think $250 is a good guess. When we first heard about the KG-UV920R, my guess was $200, but it seems that prices are rising as the Wouxun brand becomes stronger. At $200, it is a no brainer for me. At $250, I'm gonna do a little research as I might forgo a few features and get a Yaesu or Icom rig for similar money.

Baofeng Lake

I really like this picture.  Baofeng Lake, near to Zhangjiajie, Hunan province, China.

Baofeng UV-5R: Waccom UV-5R 5W

Steve points out that the 409Shop has a Waccom UV-5R for sale. The description says the unit is 5W. We've seen the other versions of the UV-3R (Magiksun, Comtex, Zastone), but the specs were normally the same. I still want to know if the UV-5R is a Baofeng product or if they are just re-branding some's hardware like they did with VeroTelecom and the UV-3R. Clearly, it is similar to the TYT TH-F8.

Baofeng UV-5R: Adding a Repeater to Memory

These instructions* are courtesy of Ed (wouxun.us, importcommunications.com, and now uv-5r.com) via the UV-5R Yahoo Group. Some people have had problems doing this - including me. I found that it would not allow me to add the memories from VFO B. I just happened to be on VFO B when I started testing, but I tried several times and couldn't figure out what was wrong - it would never give the confirmation that the REC FREQ was stored. I flipped to the VFO A and it worked the first time.

*Very slight modifications by me - changed "prompts" to "confirms" in a couple of places.

To program repeater 146.985, minus offset, 100 Hz tone, low power level, into Channel#010

Turn on radio.

If in Memory Mode switch to VFO Mode (VFO/MR)

Select 5 KHz Step - (MENU + 1 + MENU) (Use the ↑ ↓ key for 5K) (MENU + EXIT)

Enter 146.985 (The receive frequency)

Press [MENU] + 2 + [MENU]
Use the ↑↓ key to select Low Power

Press [MENU] + [EXIT]
To accept and exit

Press [MENU] + 5 + [MENU]
Use the ↑ ↓ key to select Wide Bandwidth
Press [MENU] + [EXIT]
To accept and exit

Press [MENU] + 1 + 3 + [MENU]
Use the ↑ ↓ key to select 100 Hz Tone
Press [MENU] + [EXIT]
To accept and exit

Press [MENU] + 2 + 7 + [MENU]
Enter 010 or Use the ↑ ↓ key to select 010
Press [MENU] + [EXIT]
This stores the Receive Frequency - Radio confirms that REC FREQ has been stored

Enter 146.385 (The transmit frequency)
Press [MENU] + 2 + 7 +
[MENU] + [MENU] + [EXIT]
Radio confirms that TX FREQ has been stored

Baofeng UV-5R: Ship Times

I ordered my UV-5R the night I heard it was available. It took longer than other shipments from 409Shop. I much prefer ordering from the US suppliers just because of the shipping uncertainty alone when coming direct from China. I would have done it again, but I was anxious to try the UV-5R out. I can't believe it took nine days to get to Knoxville from New York.

Baofeng UV-5R: Stock Antenna

I had only been listening to my UV-5R sporadically and, for the most part, I just left it on the desk. This afternoon I was showing it to a fellow ham and was holding it in my hand. There was an awful lot of noise/interference that I hadn't noticed earlier. I quickly realized that the problem only occurred while I was holding the radio. If I set it down, the problem went away. I don't get the best signal on any of my HTs inside my office, so I went outside and the problem still existed if I had it in my hand.

I was extremely disappointed by this discovery. What good is a handy talkie if you can't hold it?

I was comparing it to my Wouxun and my buddy suggested trying the antenna from the KG-UVD1P. Voila! Using the Wouxun antenna solved the problem. Even without any fancy equipment and testing, I'm thinking I may look for a replacement for the stock radio based on this problem alone.

Tough Mudder or Run for Your Lives

I think these would be fun. Obviously, the 10-12 miles would be more of a challenge than the 3 mile zombie run. I would probably prefer the straight up challenge over the zombie game/gimmick.

Tough Mudder

"Tough Mudder events are hardcore 10-12 mile obstacle courses designed by British Special Forces to test your all around strength, stamina, mental grit, and camaraderie. With the most innovative courses, half a million inspiring participants, and more than $2 million dollars raised for the Wounded Warrior Project, Tough Mudder is the premier adventure challenge series in the world."

A Zombie Infested 5K Obstacle Course Race

"Protect your brain and run for your life. This is one race where your legs giving out are the least of your problems. Run For Your Lives is a first-of-its-kind event, one part 5K, one part obstacle course, one part escaping the clutches of zombies — and all parts awesome.

Runners will navigate a series of 12 obstacles throughout a 5K course in an attempt to reach the finish line — all while avoiding zombies. At the end of this adventure race, you get to celebrate survival (or zombie transformation) with live entertainment and music, local celebrities, vendors, food, and of course, beer!"

Baofeng UV-3R: Extreme Modding

I'm not sure if I should compare this to working with Legos, AR building, or customizing a Fast & Furious type Japanese sports car, but RDS_6 went all out with his mods on the UV-3R:

1. Added 47pF missing capacitor to VHF LPF. Improved VHF 2nd harmonic
suppression by 12dB.
2. Added 0.001uF (i.e., 1nF) capacitor from PTT line to ground. Solved PTT
lock-up problem with external mic.
3. Changed R13 in path from RDA1486 transceiver chip to LM4890 AF amp chip from
10K to 33K. To reduce RX audio volume.
4. Changed R10 in path from pin 27 of MC81F8616L MCU to LM4890 AF amp chip from
100K to 1M. To reduce beep volume.
5. Added 1mm thick pad of non-woven polyester fibers between internal mic rubber
boot and front housing. To reduce mic sensitivity and to reduce wind noise.
6. Added 15K chip resistor across internal electret mic element. To reduce
internal mic sensitivity and prevent RDA1486 transceiver chip from overdriving
and limiting/distorting TX audio.
7. Built quarter-wave (i.e., 19.5 inch (495mm)) antenna from 20-gauge (0.032")
music wire. To replace unimpressive dual-band antenna that came with the radio
when I bought it used.
8. Added quarter-wave (i.e., 19.5 inch (495mm)) counterpoise of 22-gauge
stranded wire. To further improve antenna.
9. Bought Body Glove universal cell phone pouch 170-5997 (CRC91777) for $2.97
clearance price at Radio Shack. To protect and carry radio.
10. Punched holes in the cell phone pouch for internal microphone and speaker.
To be able to use radio with internal mic and speaker while in pouch.
11. Bought UltraLast UL-NP60 (230-0485) 1100mAH lithium-ion batteries for $1.97
clearance price at Radio Shack. To have extra batteries at almost no cost.
12. Used only the radio's internal charging circuit, not the external tray
charger, to charge the batteries. To ensure the radio's LTC4054 lithium-ion
battery charge controller chip is managing battery charging.

NoteSlate

Since the new iPad was announced yesterday, I thought I would check on our old friend the "too good to be true" NoteSlate. The last update on their blog was more than a year ago (17 FEB 2011) and no new tweets in months, so still vaporware.

I know I declared it dead, but I can't help still hoping.

Server Names

Fun stuff going on over at Slashdot in a post about how to name servers. I greatly prefer a combination of location and function for my server names. A couple of comments did make me laugh - they hit a little too close to home.

From MightyMartian we have:
"Indeed. After years of enduring networks with servers with tree names or GI Joe character names, when it came for me to come up with names for my servers and other network devices, I came up with functional names that describe physical locations, departments, functions, and so forth. That way I have a descriptive network rather than trying to remember which one of the Power Rangers the last IT guy liked the best."
And from Dave Emami we get:
"The Naming of Servers is a serious matter,
It isn't just one of your holiday games.
You may think at first I'm as mad as a hatter
When I tell you a server has three different names...
... those being DNS entry, IP, and the one which "the server itself knows, and never will confess."

Baofeng UV-3R: UV-3R + Plus - A 409Shop Exclusive?

Chris, NH7QH Radio Supplies, is being told that the UV-3R + Plus is going to be exclusive to the 409Shop (and its siblings under other names). Haw anyone seen it for sale anywhere else? Funny how that kinda slipped by me.

Baofeng UV-5R: Availability

Looks like several people have received their UV-5R. I am still waiting on mine. And Matt @ AmateurRadio.com discovered that Import Communications will begin selling them next week for $65. Others are reporting that the Chinese dealers like 409Shop are currently out of stock.

Baofeng UV-5R: DTMF

Impossible to know for sure until someone gets their hands on one, but it really looks like the UV-5R will have a DTMF capability.

First, we have this form in the UV-5R software:

And from the manual, we have these two sections. The first from the list of menu options and the second the detail about that menu option.
