Digital Radios and Preppers

I talked some about ham radio and prepping after reading "Patriots - Surviving the Coming Collapse," but did not think about the potential benefits of something like the Kirisun S780:
"Preppers usually like to have communications equipment prepared for possible times of disaster. In a WROL situation, where someone could loot you for all your preparations if they knew about them, I'm sure preppers would like to have encrypted communications, so that anyone with a scanner can't find out where they keep their food stores or secret stash of fuel.
These Kirisun radios provide inherent security, in that not many people will have radios that use the same vocoder, and it is unlikely anyone around you will have one. This could be called "security through obscurity". That is even if you don't turn on the encryption. To a scanner listening in analog, these radios just sound like a load of noise. Now, if someone were to buy a radio the same as you, and program it up to the same frequency, they would be able to listen in to any unencrypted comms. That's where the encryption comes in handy. Switch over to an encrypted channel, and they will not be able to understand it at all. All you hear when listening to an encrypted channel on a radio without encryption, is a few funny digital noises."

Kirisun S780: Undressed

People keep taking things apart - don't they know how risky this is?!?! And this is an expensive radio. (Well, I guess my Leixen VV-808 is expensive now, too.)

Baofeng UV-B5: Flashlight Mod

You know I like opening radios up for no apparent reason. This UV-B5 was especially attractive to me - look two rotary encoders with that easily breakable blue plastic!

But that's not the point...

See, this enterprising soul has discovered that you can add a flashlight to the UV-B5:
"Just underneath where the rotary knob is the two holes for the flashlight L.E.D. on the UV-B6 model.
Even though the circuit board is printed UV-B5; I assume that both radio's have the same circuit boards?
It also look like the switching transistor for the L.E.D. next to it. I wonder if you put an led in here whether it would light up? If so maybe a backlight mod can be done as the button under the monitor IS wired in circuit (On the B5). I take it that the flashlight on the UV-B6 is either ON or OFF and doesn't flash? if so then this has given me food for thought!"
Then:
"Just temporarily put an L.E.D. in the holes and it works! So a mod can be done to have a UV-B5 with a flashlight!! All the components ARE already in circuit on the PCB."

Now some may ask "Why?" when you could get a UV-B6. To them I say, why not? Also, you could have both a flash light and knob for changing channels.

Anyone? I'm googling now.

bbrannan @brickolore Hey, you ever heard of an Anytone AT-3318UV or AT-398UV? Another with true dual band receive maybe.

Weierwei VEV-789 and VEV-889: Pricing

I got an e-mail back from the folks at Weierwei Radios with pricing for single units of the VEV-789 and VEV-889.

VEV-789VHF and 898UHF = $163

Also, the VEV-768 is $146. I just noticed the model on the site is actually listed as a VEV-768+. I don't know if that changed or I missed it.

Updates from Hans

KSUN KS-8R
What's different from all the others? Two memory banks with 128 spots each.

Quansheng TG-620
What's different from all the others? 245 MHz for Thailand or somewhere similar. I thought they had to be red, too.

Tesunho/EDCGear TH-UV7R
What's different from all the others? Colors for the operator who operates in operations. I want to build one of my AR-15 lowers in FDE, so maybe I need one of these to match.

Monoprice and Amazon Basics

I've bought my share of inexpensive electronics. If I need some cables, adapters, or other miscellaneous small electronics and I am wanting to save money, but avoid some risk, I usually check two places.

Monoprice (Coupon "xmasinjuly" good for 5% off today and tomorrow.) - I've bought a ton of network patch cables from them along with other cables.

- or -

Amazon Basics - These are Amazon store brand electronics. I've had bad luck with iPhone chargers and the like from overseas. Amazon's stuff is higher quality without paying a premium.

I fixed something.

My iPhone 5 thought the headphones were plugged in - even though they weren't. This meant no sound was coming out of the handset speaker.

I tried the fixes here, but what actually worked for me was removing almost all of the cotton from one end of a Q-tip. I gave it a little twist in the headphone jack cavity and pulled something out. That little black spec was the cause of all my problems. I was expecting a little metal shaving of some sort, but it looked more like lent.

Tower Build

That's a big hole.

Kirisun S780: Update

Some more info on the Kirisun S780.

I watched the following video at Han's place.

I also found (surprise!) a Yahoo Group for the S780.

Which then lead me to this most excellent blog - http://radiosification.blogspot.com:
"This blog will be closely linked with my YouTube account and will feature similar themes. I aim to cover topics to do with radio including the use of scanners; software defined radio; PMR446; UHF and VHF radio; amateur radio; shortwave listening; digital modes such as DMR, dPMR, NXDN, TETRA, maybe even D-STAR, and decoding some of these modes."
Which, of course, turns out to be the same person that did the video. He's got a lot of good info on the S780. I've added him to my RSS feed.

Watching and reading all the stuff above has me even more interested in the S780 - despite it being outside my normal price range.

Must Have Feature

My wife's car is in for service. I'm driving a seven year newer version of her car as a loaner. It has lots of fancy features - rear camera, radio mutes when the car is in reverse, a button to engage the parking brake, etc. Of all the changes, the one thing I wish I had the most - the cup holders. The cup holder in our car is horrible - basically unusable.

QTH Bathtub

That explains the rash of new Chinese radios that meet the MIL-STD-810 standard or the like for waterproofing.

AnyTone Intellectual Property and TYT

Ed (Import Communications) passed along the following:
To Whom this may Concern:
Please be aware that our Company, Qixiang Electron Science & Technology Co., Ltd., is the manufacturer and designer of the industry leading AT-588 mobile transceiver. We are sending you this notice as where we wish to inform you that our intellectual property has been stolen by a competitive manufacturer from Quanzhou City, China, TYT Electronics Co., Ltd..
They sold worldwide a copy of our radio, which they called the TH9000.
Based on the evidence presented to the courts,  the Intermediate People's Court of Quanzhou City announced after trial on June 17,2013, the following verdict:
1) It was found where TYT illegally obtained the technical files of the Model AT-588 (single band mobile radio) from Qixiang and used this information to produce a copy and sold their copied model TH-9000 to the industry.
2)TYT was ordered to stop the production and sales of the TH9000
3) TYT was fined 4 million RMB ($650,000 USD) for its tort and illegal activity as damages to Qixiang.
The decision of the courts was fair and just, and brings another level of integrity to the radio manufacturing sector in China.
It  also reminds all professional radio manufacturers in China to the intellectual property of others and this decision reminds of them what they cannot do.
We remind all TYT resellers and users of the TYT Model  TH9000 about this court decision and advise all TYT customers or others to cease from advertising, selling, or supporting  the TH-9000 model transceiver. Qixiang Electron Science & Technology Co., Ltd., will protect its intellectual property and will prosecute to the fullest worldwide anyone found to sell the products in question.
Meanwhile, we hope our customers will support our original designed products, this will be lead us to stable and continued long-term business.

Wow.  I wonder if this will have any impact to all the other "clones" we see. I suspect many of the clones are sold by the original manufacturer and re-branded, but there are probably others out there that are not. And will they start protecting the intellectual property of non-Chinese companies? That has long been a concern of taking tech to China to be built.

KYD NC-UV90A: Dual Band Mobile Update Update

The previous update was "The price is not yet fixed now, but it will be around USD230. The item will be ready at the beginning of April. Right now it is under double testing and will start sample order later soon."

The new update is:
"As to the NC-UV90A, it will be available soon. Right now it is under final testing, and will get to production soon, maybe early of August.
The price for it now is USD198. Hope it is workable for you."

Dead Man's Switch

Schneier points out that is works both ways for Snowden:
"I'm not sure he's thought this through, though. I would be more worried that someone would kill me in order to get the documents released than I would be that someone would kill me to prevent the documents from being released. Any real-world situation involves multiple adversaries, and it's important to keep all of them in mind when designing a security system."

Via Nate... a followup on the TD-Q8AH.

The guy doing the video doesn't like it. And the batteries aren't compatible with the UV-5R.

American Girl Doll

And this is why I buy inexpensive radios... my daughter at the American Girl store. The dolls alone cost about the same as three Baofengs. And then there are the clothes and accessories - like a sailboat. (Luckily, we only got the doll and her grandparents are subsidizing this one.)

She got the doll on Saturday and basically has not put it down for three days. Even in full tightwad curmudgeon mode, I have to admit it is already money well spent.

So I got this in the mail yesterday after renewing my ARRL membership.

And I already had this. I've had it so long that it covers the old question set.

Maybe it is time for me to start studying.

Leixen VV-808: Popping Issue Fixed

Eileen sent me an unprompted follow-up e-mail on the popping issue - which, to me, is a good sign that they want to provide high quality products and fix any issues that are discovered in the field. Here is what she wrote:
"For the "popping" sound, it is a procedure problem, some radio would appear the "popping" sound often, and some may appear seldom, so people ignore the "popping". For fix the problem have to change the CPU of the radio. So it can just fixed by us. If some one want to send the radio back for fixing the problem, we will fix it for free, but he should pay the freight cost. But I think the freight fee maybe too expensive, so if some one can change the clip as attached by himself, I can send one to him. But I think it is difficult for ordinary people. As you know, disassembling the radio may break the radio, and changing the clip would be much difficult. And we won't warrant the radio again since it is disassembled."
I read that as a software/code (procedure) problem in the firmware. Since the chip has to be replaced, then it must be like most other radios with a write-once chip. She sent the picture below, too. I think replacing that chip is beyond my skill level. (I'm just hoping to fix the rotary encoder when I get it and that's just three solder points! That's complicated enough for me.)

I just noticed that Ed Greany had a URL in his e-mail signature. He is one of the two Eds that were always so helpful - especially in the early days - on the Yahoo group when the Wouxun HTs were just entering the market.
