Pioneer Rayz Plus - 1st World Earbud Problem

One complaint about the elimination of the headphone jack on the iPhone was that you couldn't charge the phone and use wired headphones at the same time. The Pioneer Rayz Plus solves that problem. It's billed as noise cancelling, Lightning - Talk & Charge, Smart Earbuds. For a mere $129, you get all the fancy, app controlled sound tweaks along with the ability to charge your phone. I'm clearly not their target audience. I'd rather grab a set of cheap wireless Bluetooth earbuds and a battery pack.

Review here.

How to Charge Your Smart Phone

Interesting advice...

- Don't charge to 100%
- Try to keep the charge between 65-75%
- Partial charges do no harm

Speaker Mic for Your Phone

And the worst thing about it... it won't work with your iPhone 7 if the rumors are true and the headphone jack is going away.

Slow iOS 8 Adoption

If users are slow to adopt iOS 8 because of disk space issues, then maybe Apple will stop making 16 GB devices and go to 32 GB as the smallest. I know that flies in the face of their strategy to push everyone to iCloud, but 16 GB is definitely on the smallish size these days.

And an Alarm Clock, too

I was thinking about how my phone had replaced my alarm clock this morning. I had an alarm clock that I used for the better part of 25 years. A while back, my daughter was playing with it and broke the snooze button. It kinda stressed me out - change bad!!!! I replaced it with a similar one, but I never use the alarm functionality on it. I still like to glance at the time in the middle of the night, but I suppose I could get use to doing that on the phone, too.

iCloud Backup

My iPhone and iPad frequently complain that my iCloud account is full and that they cannot complete a backup. I always ignored it as I don't have anything on my devices that isn't backed up some other way. I saw this HowToGeek article via LifeHacker. It made me realize there is no reason to send my pictures/videos to iCloud when Dropbox is capturing them anyway. Duh. Problem solved.

Gadgets and Gimics

For the most part, I'm not spending money on anything but the essentials, so I won't pony up for these, but I thought they were cool.

First, the Rocketfish™ - 3' Lighted Lightning Charge/Sync Cable. The cable is illuminated along its length. The lights show the flow of the charge - fast as it does the rapid charge, slowing as the charge nears 100%, and turning off when the charge is complete.

I also keep thinking about getting a Raspberry Pi, but since I'm not a Linux guy, I might need this Linux Cheat Sheet Shirt.

FireChat

One of the commonly discussed benefits of ham radio is that it works without the support of someone else's infrastructure. FireChat promises "off-the-grid" communications using your Android or iOS mobile phone. In a tweet, they say:
"It works using Bluetooth and P2P Wifi (iOS) / WiFi Direct (Android). On Android, it uses Open Garden's mesh tech software."
The range is listed as about 30 feet, so don't throw out all your ham equipment for a SHTF situation. I'm surprised it isn't better with WiFi - even marginally. The most common complaint about the current version is the lack of filters/the ability to setup private chat areas. And you can't chat between iOS and Android devices.

Also, FireChat has been mentioned by Rush Limbaugh, so it must be good.

It's a neat idea, but with such limited range I don't think it offers much for me.

A good article about the iOS battery life and how to resolve drain problems.

Upgrade Cycle

Speaking of iPhones...

So my wife's car is almost 10 years old and my car is about 9. Does this mean we will need to start upgrading every two years?

Cost of an iPhone

In the US, $707. In Brazil, about $1,200.

My company looked at doing business in Brazil. I learned about several complexities on the accounting side. I suspect these "complexities" explain the extra $500.

iPhone Air?

I love the speculation about the next generation of phones... in this case, the iPhone 6.

Hogue iPhone Case

I really like my Magpul iPhone case. It doesn't add much to the size/weight, but offers enough protection that I think it would survive a drop or two.

I see that Hogue is getting into the iPhone case game. Lots of people like the Hogue grips, so this might be a good match for a case. They've got several options... all of which are out of my price range.

New iPhones

From my Twitter feed...
LoneNutVolFan: iPhone 5 C for the commoners S for the superior caste

Monday, July 29, 2013

I fixed something.

My iPhone 5 thought the headphones were plugged in - even though they weren't. This meant no sound was coming out of the handset speaker.

I tried the fixes here, but what actually worked for me was removing almost all of the cotton from one end of a Q-tip. I gave it a little twist in the headphone jack cavity and pulled something out. That little black spec was the cause of all my problems. I was expecting a little metal shaving of some sort, but it looked more like lent.
