Baofeng Tech: UV-5001 and UV-2501+220

A couple of shots to show the relative size of the Baofeng Tech UV-5001 and the UV-2501+220. It's not that the UV-5001 is that big - the UV-2501+220 is amazingly compact.

Baofeng Tech UV-5001 Gen 3

Woo hoo! 50 Watts of dual mobile goodness - the Baofeng Tech UV-5001 Gen 3! I've got the programming cable, so it is ridiculously easy to get on the air. Power, antenna, and the microphone plus a minute to download the software and I'm hitting the 940 repeater.

Baofeng BF-F9: On Woot

At the end of May, Woot was selling the Baofeng BF-F9 for about $40. It generated quite a thread on the UV-5R Yahoo Group. There was some worry about unlicensed folks getting their hands on the radios, since they were promoted on Woot. I guess the thinking was that Woot has a diverse audience that might be interested in the cool toy/walkie talkie, but have no interest or knowledge of the licensing requirements to transmit. (Also, speculating here that this is different from Amazon or other web sites where people are more likely to be intentionally searching for radios instead of having one pop up on the page.)

k4rgn shared this note:
As someone who ordered a Baofeng from Woot yesterday before they sold out, I just received an email from Woot saying:
"Dear Potential Hammie, So you bought the BaoFeng Ham Two-way Radio Transceiver from us very recently! Thank you! Listen to your hearts content! But we somehow forgot to offer a little reminder that HAM radio transmission requires a license! And if you send without it, you're gonna get in trouble with the FCC. Read here for more: http://www.arrl.org/getting-licensed http://www.arrl.org/getting-licensed . If you already knew all that, excellent! But if you didn't know that, we want to give you a chance to get a refund. Just email support@woot.com by June 3rd, 10 AM CST and say I CAN'T HAM-DLE IT! and we'll cancel the order and get you your money back, just like that. Or, of course, you could get that license and learn the wonderful and majestic world of HAM. Wouldn't that be fun? Huh? Wouldn't it? It's up to you, Woot.com"
Congrats to whoever provoked Woot to send this.
I think it is nice that they sent the note, but I believe the obligation is with the buyer. I'm trying to think of analogies with cars or guns. I'm pretty sure I showed a license to purchase my last car, but that was more a piece of the financial transaction. It wasn't to prove I was permitted to drive. I'm pretty big on personal responsibility and since there is a real (however unlikely) case that the radio could be used as a receiver only, I have no problem with them being sold on Woot.

Hopefully, we'll add even more folks to the hobby.

Boafeng Tech: Gen 3 Mobile Updates

The Baofeng Tech UV-2501 and Baofeng Tech UV-5001 got some updates:
GENERATION 3 UPDATESThe 3rd Gen. BTECH mobiles focus on significant hardware updates. The UV-2501 update includes a built-in external temperature cooling fan and an exclusive updated board which provides unmatched performance compared to any transceiver in its class - focusing on refined audio clarity, selectivity, and filtering. The firmware has also been updated with user adjustable DTMF Gain and Mic Gain. Power toggling is now selectable right on the keypad.
Looks like the same update applies to the UV-5001 as well.

        No Baofeng Policy

        N4NJJ - No Baofeng Policy:
"In order to provide the best experience for all operators, our repeater system has a zero tolerance for Baofeng, Wouxon, Retevis, etc. radios. These portables do not have the ability to perform pre-emphasis/de-emphasis, which results in below acceptable audio levels. Users to the system are encouraged to operate a commercial and/or public safety grade portable or mobile. Users are also encouraged to use amateur grade gear."
And N4NJJ's open letter about the policy.

        Baofeng UV-82HP: Keypad Programming

Somehow I missed the UV-82HP and didn't get it on "The Radios" page. I've fixed that now. And speaking of the Baofeng UV-82HP, here's a tutorial for programming it (and others) from the keypad.

Baofeng Tech UV-2501+220: Programming from the Radio

Programming the Baofeng Tech UV-2501+220 without the software is a lot more time consuming, but definitely doable as this video demonstrates. If you plan on loading it up with lots channels, you'll want to use the software and get the FTDI USB Programming Cable.

Chapter 4 of the manual (PDF) has written instructions that walk you through the programming as well.

Baofeng Tech UV-2501+220: Programming from your PC

A how-to video for installing and programming your Baofeng Tech UV-2501+220. Grab the software here. You'll need a USB cable like the BTECH PC04 FTDI USB Programming Cable as well. (The process is the same for the Baofeng Tech UV-2501 and Baofeng Tech UV-5001 - simply download the appropriate software for those models.)

Some general comments about using programming software for radios:

If the you can't figure out which Comm Port the radio is using, go to the Device Manager in Windows. You can see which port is correct or if the cable isn't showing as installed properly. The latter is often the guess if you aren't using a genuine FTDI chip.

As a best practice, I always like to save a copy of the original configuration before I make any changes.
