Wouxun Factory Yahoo Group

YAYG - Yet Another Yahoo Group... but this time it is the Wouxun factory folks. I'm not sure if this is a good way to reach if they want to primarily provide updates. It will, and already has, become a place where people are looking for support. That's fine, if help is provided.

"Dear All,

KG-UV920R: Programming from your PC

So the programming software for the KG-UV920R was uploaded to the Wouxun Yahoo Group. And it turns out that Wouxun has called the software: KG_UV920R Commander V0.1.0. Beta - Programming Software by Wouxun. Ed notes that Wouxun is aware they have appropriated the name "commander" that has been used by Jim for his popular KG-UV Commander software for quite some time.

I guess we should just be happy they didn't call it the Commander CHIRP programming software.

I also see you can get the USB programming cable on eBay now.

Updated after posting: VA3ISP has a fix for an import error when trying to use the software with an Excel file.

Wouxun Radios Yahoo Group Moderator Needed

Wouxun Radios Yahoo Group Moderator:
"I've lost 2 Wouxun radios to the "Suicide Chip" bug.  Additionally, the popularity of this brand has waned.  When my third radio fails, I'll no longer have any interest in Wouxun radios.
As a result, I'll be leaving this group after a new owner is found.  If interested, please let me know.

Thanks... John KD8DVR"

Wouxun KG-UV920R: Problems and Delays

From Kight Radio:
"Wouxun has released limited quantities of their new Dual Band mobile to dealers. All dealers are limited to 10 units at this time because the mobile is not if full production yet. They did release some of the dual band mobile to the Chinese market to test and and Chinese wholesalers reported problems with them and they were returned to Wouxun and were told it would be abother 30 days before the problem is fixed ( this was on 6/2 ) The new radios will not have 2.5 steps and they will not be FCC certified. The sample dealers are being shipped by Wouxun on July 9th so it will be July 13 or 14 before they show up at the dealers. I would watch ebay close, I am sure one will be found there within a few days"
As predicted they are showing up on eBay as David and someone on the Yahoo Group noticed, but the listing has already been pulled.

Wouxun Price To Remain Flat

Maybe I spoke too soon about the Wouxun price increase, but Ed is a credible source. The problem is that the other Ed, also credible, says he will not be having a price increase. See the exchange below.
"Actually you're over by 40% in that example.
Wouxun.US will have no price increase for the foreseeable future.

Followed by:
"Ed,

We'll see. I was quoted a price increase effective May 1st. I haven't reordered yet this month so we'll see when I do. I hope they don't shoot themselves in the foot by 1) a price increase or 2) more rumors (like the mobile).

Wouxun.US is now ImportCommunications.com

I guess it is official now. I'd figured it out a while ago - not that it was a big secret as far as I could tell. But I have no idea why Ed didn't make some sort of announcement. He could have changed his e-mail signature with a little note or something without even having to do a post about it to the UV-3R or Wouxun Yahoo Groups.

In any case, if you go to ImportCommunications.com, it will forward you to Wouxun.us.

I think the new name makes sense. He can sell radios from more manufacturers now without being locked in to the Wouxun name.

I've mentioned before that I bought a radio from him and was very pleased with his service. Best wishes to Ed with Import Communications!

Wouxun KG-UVD1P

An oldie, but a goodie...
"I have 6 (six) variants of this radio with the original UV-1D being my favorite! Back in 2011 when I first became a ham radio op, the Wouxun was the 'cheap' low-cost entry level rig (the world before baofeng). Coming in at nearly $80 less than the stellar FT-60 the UV-1D was right in my budget range. 8 (Eight) Years later, it's still my 'go-to' handi. While it's not my favorite HT (Kenwood TH-k20) it is the one I find myself using anytime I am forced to use a hand-held radio. Over the years I've added a pair of 2m/6m and 2m/220 versions as well as a few spare 2m/70cm rigs. When my eldest passed his tech test last year-he got a New Wouxun HT. As you can see I'm pretty heavily invested in Wouxun, and although I sometimes wonder if I'd been better off with an offering from the Big3 (unattainable in '11), when you add it all up ($) it seems like money well spent. Wouxun KG-UV920R: Problems

Posted on Kight Radio last night:
"7/19
The Wouxun Dual band Mobile is out but its got problems. The Cross Band repeat is not setup correctly. It will repeat but will not transmit on the offset needed to access repeaters. The way they have it setup is worthless to the ham. This radio should not have been released. This shows that Wouxun did not have this radio checked ahead of time by USA Hams. The new radio is worthless the way it operates. Looks like Anytone or TYT will be the mobile to buy. Wouxun also tried to fix the price on the Dual band Mobile to be $325 - $350 which is way too high for the Chinese Radio."
It is one thing to be priced high. It is another thing to be priced high AND not work well. So Anytone, TYT, or the BAOJIE BJ-UV55 are looking like the better options. Nate sent me stuff on the BJ-UV55. I need to dig on that one and the Anytone. Anyone got some more hours in the day they can spare?

AnyTone AT-588UV: Import Communications Flyer and Survey

Ed sends out the following regarding the AnyTone AT-588UV. Sounds like it is the Chinese mobile we have all been waiting for. Please note his request for feedback via a survey at the bottom of his message.

Dual Band Mobile

Detachable Head
Cross-band Repeat
50/40 Watts Output
758 Memories
AM Aircraft Receive
Wide-band FM Receive
2013 FCC Compliant

After the dismal performance and high price of Wouxun's dual band mobile radio, I'm excited to share information about the AnyTone AT-588UV. I have been testing this radio for a couple of weeks and I'm impressed. I think this will be the Chinese dual bander that takes the market.

It's computer programmable and the control head separates from the radio via a CAT5 cable. This radio is easy to manually operate because there are no sub-menus and there are matching controls for the left and right sides. Either side can be set for VHF or UHF or both the same. It has dual receive (two signals at once) and when transmitting, you can set the off side to be muted if desired. Unlike the Wouxun, with the AnyTone, you can scan one side while monitoring the other side. It only takes a couple button pushes to set up cross band repeat. And unlike the other brand, this cross band repeat actually works! It has AM Aircraft receive plus 220-260 MHz receive (sorry NO 220 transmit).

The company has given me this timeline for availability. They plan to produce a small run at the end of September and hopefully full production by the end of October. I suggested they make a larger test run because I've found nothing major that needs improving. I've made a few suggestions for firmware changes which they quickly approved. This company is interested in producing a good product. When the AT-588UV is available to purchase, I will send an announcement to this mailing list.

The owners manual is not yet available but I have a list of the various functions. I will post this information and the programming software on my web site as soon as I can. This will take you to that location.

Question Poll

To get a better understand on how the AT-588UV will be used and some options that may be needed, I have written a pool of questions. The results of this survey will help convience the manufacturer of any changes that need to be made or options added. Your participation will be appreciated. Here is a link to the poll:

Wouxun KG-UV920R: Are you a betting man?

I'm not saying it won't show up next month. I'm not saying it won't show up at all. It has just been too long in coming for me to want to put any money on it. I'll stick with safer bets like sub-prime mortgages.

RadioG3OCR says:

If the normal pricing system is followed, that probably means the price in N. America should be around US$250 - The UK sellers can never understand the correct exchange rate!

(G3OCR rushes off to poke the knife through the slot in the piggy-bank to see how much money is in there!)

Wouxun KG-UV920R: July Brochure

Wouxun posted an update to the Yahoo Group with a new brochure for the KG-UV920R. I wonder if "marketed" means available for sale/brought to market or just advertised.
"TO ALL:
WOUXUN FIRST MOBILE RADIO KG-UV920R is marketed this July. Please view the
product information on the leaflet which we uploaded on FILES:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Wouxun_KG-UVD1/message/10105

Wouxun Defects: The Other Side

After all the posts about Ed's divorce, Hans had a couple of Wouxun sellers comment on his site.

UK:
"We have sold THOUSANDS of their entire range and bar a very very low percentage of failures, have not encountered the problem he reports."
Netherlands:
"While he sold at least 500 dual-band Wouxun models, he only ran into the problem once."
So is Ed unlucky? Did he get bad lots? Is he wrong? I've worked with the Chinese enough to be aware of some of the cultural differences that can create problems. I've had problems with our plants in Mexico and Italy, too. It's just easier when everyone thinks (mostly) the same way. But ignoring some of the communication and ordering problems, the question remains: is there a big quality problem with Wouxun radios? The data is not very clear. I took what Ed posted at face value. We've all seen quality problems with the Chinese radios, so it was all to easy to just run with his comments.

I'm going to do some more analysis and get back to you.

Wouxun KG-UV9D

BuyTwoWayRadios announces the new Wouxun KG-UV9D:
"Billed by Wouxun as a multi-band, multi-RX, multi-display, multi-modulation and multi-functional two-way radio, the KG-UV9D offers dual band transmit and 7 (that's right, you read seven) bands reception. The list includes 76-108MHz (FM radio), 108-136MHz (AM RX), 136-174MHz FM RX/TX), 400-512MHz (FM RX/TX), 230-250MHz (FM RX), 350-400MHz (FM RX) and 700-985MHz (FM RX).
While the full color display is similar in design to the KG-UV8D, the new radio looks and feels different. The KG-UV9D also has some new or improved features. According to Wouxun, some of the features of the KG-UV9D include Twin Band Simultaneous Scan, Multi-Keypad Lock Modes and the ability to adjust the brightness of the backlight with five level settings."

Wouxun KG-UV8D: Firmware Update and Green Buttons

The latest version (firmware v1.03) of the KG-UV8D is available at BuyTwoWayRadios:
"First, the KG-UV8D is now available with 2.5k step. Early versions of this radio were only available with a minimum 5k step. Of course, an eventual update to a 2.5k version was expected, and Wouxun recently brought addition of the smaller step to market."
"The KG-UV8D comes standard with a 1700mAh battery pack in the box. However, for a limited time, Buy Two Way Radios is replacing the stock battery pack with a FREE high capacity battery upgrade!"
"Demo versions of the KG-UV8D featured green A/B and EXIT buttons on the keypad. When Wouxun officially released the radio to market, the buttons were black. Those who were expecting the KG-UV8D to ship with green buttons were disappointed to find they were black.
"Well, due to popular demand, Buy Two Way Radios worked with Wouxun to bring back the green buttons, and now we have them! This is a limited run, and we only received one hundred of them, but now you can get a KG-UV8D with green buttons while supplies last. Whether we are able to get more in the future with green buttons depends on the demand."
Some people are already getting their new ones.

Nigerian Radio - Kencomsu

There has been a lot of discussion about Chinese radio imports for the amateur market on some of the Yahoo groups to which I subscribe. Discussion may be too generous - rants may be more appropriate. As an owner of a Wouxun KG-UVD1P, you may guess I don't have a problem with letting the markets work.

After seeing the success of the Wouxun ,I did get excited for the business potential of another import when I saw this post:
"The ones that the Nigerian company "Kencomsu" makes, but they can't get them out of Nigeria because they need an export license. In order to get an export license, they need a partner in the USA who will import the radios. So, if someone in the USA will just put up $10,000 for export permits, he/she can get 1000 amateur radios delivered, which the USA partner can sell for a profit and share the revenue with the Nigerian company for all their trouble.

Want me to provide more details?"
Then I realized it was joke. I would love to run a small business like Ed at wouxun.us.

Kight Radio - Post Dayton Updates

More updates from Kight Radio posted on 21 May 2012:
"We are back from a long trip to Dayton. We have the TYT Dual Band Mobile now (This was displayed at Dayton Hamvention) I will be taking pictures of it in the morning and then its going back to TYT in China. Thank you TYT for letting us have this to show at Dayton. (TYT was happy to supply the Dual band Mobile, Wouxun was not interested in having theirs on display ???)"
I'm not sure which specific model he is referring to when he says the "TYT Dual Band Mobile." I thought the TH-9000 was a single band radio. The TYT TH-9800 is supposed to be the quad band mobile. He mentions it below. I need to finish my post about the TH-9800. I spent a few minutes looking and didn't see the dual-band pictures on his site either.

I thought there might be some news from Ed about the Wouxun KG-UV920R - I was predicting that he would have a demo unit. Based on the current chatter (here and here), no response from Ed (to his credit he is usually really good about engaging with the on-line community), and comments like the above, maybe we should be looking at TYT or Vero for the amazing value in mobile rigs.
"We also had the New TYT Th-UVF9 4 watt HT. Ed and I both have one and testing it now. This will be available within a couple weeks. I will post detailed pictures of it on this site in the morning. I will also post the New Specs for the TYT mobile too on the catalog page. They added AM receive coverage for the Air Band. This F9 HT does have the dot matrix readout."

Air band. Cool. Dot matrix readout. Also cool. I don't see the pictures and specs on the catalog page. Maybe I need some glasses or more coffee.
"TYT DUAL BAND MOBILE expected to ship in October. This is the mobile to watch for ... its actually a Quad Band Mobile covering 10, 6, 144 and 440. The other Chinese mobiles are only 144 and 440. Those of you that have waited for the Wouxun mobile should wait for the TYT first before buying one."
Earlier in the month, Nate pointed out in the comments that there could be some photoshop action going on in the TYT TH-9800 Dual/Quad band - a Yaesu FT-8800R screen? It doesn't mean the radio is fake by any stretch as I can image the marketing designer grabbing something convenient to complete the image. At least there is hard date for availability - October.

I'll keep looking and see if he posts any additional information.

Wouxun KG-UV920R: KG-UV920P

Hans follows up his day one review of the KG-UV920P with some more information in Part II. He adds some pictures and a wish-list for furthur improvements, but closes with the following comments:
"The strongest point of the Wouxun KG-UV920P is the quality of the receiver. On the frequencies that matter this receiver does what it’s supposed to do. And it better be good – we lost all those RX bands we originally drooled over."
And
"Wouxun finally competes with the big three."
