Part 90 v Part 95: Fight!

KD0TLS on Part 90 and Part 95 radios:
"Hopefully, I've narrowly averted the total collapse of Western civilisation by offering a legal alternative. It all starts with some guy in Plymouth using a TH-9000 on GMRS. Next thing you know, we're all killing each other because the law has lost its meaning."

  1. Article is completely incorrect ---

    Part 90: Commercial Use
Part 95: Public Use (FRS, GMRS, MURS)
    Part 97: Amateur Use

  3. Read his blog. He knows everyrhing, just ask him. He has a "Technician" ham licence. That makes him an expert on ham radio. The more he writes, the more he thinks he is right. I have to laugh at how stupid he is with his vast 1 year of ham radio experince.

    1. I don't think that I know everything. I think that I'm sick of this "you either know everything or you know nothing" dichotomy that some people cling to. I'm not an expert. I spelled this out clearly here: http://kd0tls.blogspot.com/2014/05/blogging-about-blog.html

I've been licensed for two years, not one. But I've had a *lifetime* interest in radio, from SWL, scanners, building radios, and operating GMRS (for over a decade). I've learned Morse and can do 5 -7 wpm. I'm a formally-trained electronics tech, too. While I am a Tech, I can certainly pass a General exam. I choose not to, because I choose not to validate the arrogant mindset that people like you display. A friend who is a VE gave me the General exam informally, and I passed it quite well. I continue to pick the brains of my fellow hams -- at least those who aren't condescending and wrapped up in false distinctions.

The more that I encounter attitudes such as yours, the more pessimistic I become about the future of the hobby. Maybe my blog isn't for you, but it sounds as if you could use a laugh (and more fibre in your diet).

  4. First of all, there is no "fight". The post was just a response to some narrow-minded guys who can't tolerate unorthodox opinions -- kind of like some your commenters here.

Second, My blog is very different from yours. It's about my experiences in the hobby, and it's closer to a diary than some kind of authoritative source of information. A lot of people don't "get" that. A lot of people don't "get" the concept of a blog in the first place. A lot of people have very narrow definitions of what ham radio media should be.

Third, I'm glad that you appreciate my writing style, but linking your kind of audience to my kind of audience is a fairly bad idea. I get a *lot* of smug and nasty emails from people much like your commenters here. It gets pretty abusive, and you kind of just *facilitated* that. I hope that that wasn't your intention, because you seem like a really decent guy and I read your blog every day.

Could you please refrain from linking to my blog in future for these reasons? I'm really happy that you read my stuff, and I welcome your input.

    1. Hey Todd - My "fight" comment was referencing the comparison of Part 90 and Part 95. I didn't intend for it to be a fight about your thoughts.

If your blog is more of a diary and you don't want feedback, then I would suggest making it private.

    2. You missed my point. I'm saying it's *different* than your blog, not that it's *private*. Maybe you consider a swarm of people calling me an idiot to be "feedback", but I would call it abuse. Believe it or not, there are a lot of people who enjoy reading the blog and don't feel compelled to leave comments like you find here. If I make it private, then those other won't be able to read it. It seems as if you're saying, " If you don't want people to tell you to shut up, then shut up ".

Anyway, I've asked you politely not to link to my blog because of the 'feedback'. Feel free to read it and give me your input; just don't sic a pack of jackals on me under the guise of 'feedback'.

    3. I do not believe I missed your point. I didn't "sic" anyone on you. I believe we have different views of how blogging (publicly) and linking works.

    4. Maybe read this:
      http://kd0tls.blogspot.com/2014/11/feedback.html
This is the "feedback" that I got. This is how you think blogging works. This is why I am asking you not to link to my blog in future.
You see your anonymous commenter there, giddy over the results. Is this what you think the hobby is all about?

  5. As we can clearly see by the previous post, Todd KD0TLS can trash talk, but can't take it. That's hilarious. "I could be a General if I wanted to". Todd is clearly most familiar with Part 95 (CB).
