Baofeng UV-5R: Kight Radio Update

Kight Radio and Electronics posted this update on their site yesterday:
"04/04/12
I would like to mention that one of the best sources of information and radios is Ed at www.wouxun.us Ed knows these radios and he one of the nicest guys I know. He will stand behind the products he sells. Ed has been a guest several times in my home in China. He sells more Wouxun Dual band radios then anyone. He is by far the largest seller of Wouxun in the US.
We are holding off selling the Baofeng UV5 because of some issues with the radio. Black out display problem, receiver being off frequency, and too much transmit audio. These problems should be solved soon and when they are, we will have them available."
I have been seeing the traffic about the off-frequency problem, but I've not had a chance to digest it all. Hopefully tomorrow I can read through the backlog and put together a summary.

  1. I don't get the off frequency issue. Though some will mention that it is not FCC Part 90 Certification, I must mention that it has a CE mark for two way radio devices. If I am not mistaken, in order to get CE mark, the unit would have to been tested for frequency accuracy among other tests and passed. Can any EU hams who have knowledge of CE certification chime in on this?

    1. Given the great debate surrounding the FCC cert for the UV-3R and the spurious transmission on the harmonics problem, this doesn't surprise me.

  2. I hope they don't forget to fix the option to save/program repeaters with shift/offset, instead of saving separate RX / TX frequencies, which requires saving twice..

    1. Seems like an easy and obvious thing to fix. Although, it does give you the opportunity to save anything you want. Not sure it would help me ever, but there is something to be said for options.

  3. For the past two days we tested the UV-5R extensively on pro test equipment, but could not replicate problems with the receiver being off. No display problems to date either, nor problems with TX audio.

@anonymous: saving the RX and TX frequency allows you to make odd splits. A bug according to some, a feature to others... :)

For those interested, a full review (in two parts) on my blog.
