I don't know what's like in the land of the Big Mac, but here in the UK, it's going to be a lonely old place if your car only has UHF. Dual band is a must. I'd go for a Leixen VV-898 any day, over this and I can get it delivered with taxes paid for £80.

Delete898 is basically UV-5R in different form factor at twice the price
This radio looks like the ultimate FRS base/mobile. If it's durable.
