Frac - 3D Tetris

A random conversation reminded me of a computer game I played in the early 90's: Frac (3D Tetris). I fired up the browser version and I was surprised that my fingers remembered how to manipulate the pieces. Good times.

C64 Mini

I need a miniature version of the Commodore 64 like I need a whole in the head. I still want one. A friend of mine had a VIC-20 when we were growing up.

Compaq

I enjoyed listening to the How I Built This story about Compaq. We ran a lot of Compaq hardware back in the day, but I really didn't understand the bigger picture of what was going on. I did like my 575 desktops!

Telnet Star Wars

So there was the Star Wars traceroute... now you can see A New Hope in ASCII via telnet. Telnet towel.blinkenlights.nl.

Serial Ports

Ah, the good old days of serial and parallel ports... I have several tubs of old computer hardware - IDE cables, video and sound cards, old processors (even my favorite of all time - the Celeron 300A*), etc. I went through them over the week-end and have set aside about a third of it to be recycled. I digress...

Alex (PA1SBM) finds no serial ports or PCI on his new PC, but after a false start finds a card that works.

* Does it make me a huge geek for having a favorite CPU? I just remember how much bang for the buck you got with the Celeron 300A as it easily overclocked to 450 MHz.

How to Fix Your PC

These are just painful... apparently, step 1 is to locate a wrench.

USB Type C

The new Macbook has a Type C USB connector.
"USB-C port with support for:
Charging
USB 3.1 Gen 1 (up to 5 Gbps)
Native DisplayPort 1.2 video output
VGA output using USB-C VGA Multiport Adapter (sold separately)
HDMI video output using USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter (sold separately)"
I wonder if the Lightning connector will be replaced.

Low Cost HP Windows Laptops

"HP's Stream brand will now encompass laptops with 11.6-, 13.3- and 14-inch screens, while tablets will be available with 7- or 8-inch screens; all the devices will run Windows 8.1. The Stream 7 tablet is the cheapest of the bunch, priced at just $100, while the Stream 8 will cost $150. The Stream 11 laptop will cost $200, followed by the Stream 13 at $230. All the devices will go on sale in November."
It would be worth it for this alone... Office 365 Personal is $70/year:
"Each device will come with a one-year subscription package to Microsoft services that includes Office 365 Personal, 1TB of OneDrive cloud storage and 60 monthly minutes of Skype. Additionally, the Stream 8 will include 200MB of free 4G data each month for the life of the device at no additional cost."

Upside Down

So Apple had to pull back the iOS 8.0.1 update. And now there is the Shellshock BASH vulnerability.

Time to upgrade your Mac or Linux box to Windows for a secure computing environment!

Home Data Center

I've added a Dell Mini 10 running Ubuntu and have a Frankensteined desktop that has replaced the one that died a while back. So I am slowly moving in this direction - the home data center.

(Who am I kidding? I'm all about being a minimalist now and I grumble enough about my electric bill.)
