The Winds of Winter

George R. R. Martin posts an update on the next book in the A Song of Ice and Fire series, The Winds of Winter:
"THE WINDS OF WINTER is not finished.
Believe me, it gave me no pleasure to type those words. You're disappointed, and you're not alone. My editors and publishers are disappointed, HBO is disappointed, my agents and foreign publishers and translators are disappointed... but no one could possibly be more disappointed than me. For months now I have wanted nothing so much as to be able to say, "I have completed and delivered THE WINDS OF WINTER" on or before the last day of 2015.
But the book's not done."
I'm not surprised that it's not finished. I will be surprised when it is. This next statement did surprise me.
"Look, I never thought the series could possibly catch up with the books, but it has."
Have you seen a calendar? Can you do basic math?

Middle Out Backups

Anyone doing backups in the modern era probably already knows about reverse incremental backups, but after watching yesterday's Silicon Valley, I'm going to invent the "middle out" backup and make millions!

True Detective Season 2

Something about this doesn't seem right to me.

True Detective

I've been watching True Detective on HBO. My wife snapped this picture on the greenway near our house. It looks like the Yellow King is lurking.

WOW HBO Go!

Some good news... I'm getting HBO Go later this year. Game of Thrones on the iPad Mini! Knology was always slower than Comcast at getting features. We switched to Knology years ago when they had just a few high def stations. Their offering lacked some features the other cable companies, but the internet connection has always been fast and the I've saved a ton of money using them. Now if they will upgrade the cable boxes, so that I can control them from my smartphone or tablet, we will be rocking.

"Dear WOW! Customer,
We’ve heard from many of you, our HBO customers, that you want HBO GO. At WOW!, we’re HBO GO enthusiasts too, so we understand why you are asking. If you’re not familiar with HBO GO, it’s an online application available only to HBO subscribers that offers video streaming of HBO programs on your computer and other mobile devices.

To make HBO GO available, we need to do some technical work that takes a bit of time to complete. This involves integrating systems between WOW! and the former cable provider in your market, Knology. We are working hard to make this content available as quickly as possible and aim to have HBO GO ready this fall. We realize that it’s frustrating knowing that HBO GO is already available in other WOW! markets and we want you to know that we will make it happen for you, too. Once we’ve completed the technical integration, all WOW! customers will be able to enjoy the HBO GO experience, no matter where you are located.

Please hang in there and know that we are on our way with HBO GO.

Thank you for letting us serve you.

What Do You Mean If?

George RR Martin is a slow writer. There is now a race between him finishing the books and the HBO series based on his books catching up. This article asks if the show will catch the books. I don't think it is a question. The show will catch the books because George is a writer first and a business man second. The creative process will not be rushed.

Much to my disappointment.

Game of Thrones and HBO

Some notes as the Game of Thrones Season 2 ends...

Game of Thrones is this season's most pirated show.

And if people like the content so much, maybe HBO should start offering it directly. I would probably pay for an HBO Go account since my provider, Knology, doesn't include it with the HBO subscription.

And a funny suggestion for other shows to watch while we wait for the third season.

Game of Thrones: Religions of Westeros

This video is a good review of the religions in Westeros from the A Song of Ice and Fire series of books and the HBO Game of Thrones TV series. One of my favorite things about the books is how tightly the culture, geography, religion, fashion, and architecture are tied together.

BREAKING: #GameofThrones has been renewed for Season 3

Excellent! According to GRRM, the third season will only cover about half of the third book. I think that is a good sign that they want to stretch out the series. Of course, this also takes the pressure off GRRM to finish the next book. I had been predicting a race to publish the sixth book verses the HBO series catching up.

Game of Thrones - Cold Winds Are Rising

Only three plus months until Game of Thrones Season 2 starts. I heard rumors that it had already been picked up for Seasons 3 and 4, but I haven't seen anything official.

SuperHeroes on HBO

It is well worth an hour and a half to watch. These guys are under constant threat, aid the homeless, and only take the occasional break for a beer. Some of them even have girlfriends - metaphorically speaking.
