Random Castaway Note
A random conversation led to talking about Castaway. I ended up looking to see if it was based on a true story. (It's not.) I did discover this interesting note about a parody commercial:
A FedEx commercial during the 2003 Super Bowl parodied the final scene of the film, in which Chuck returns a package to its sender. In this version, the woman answers the door, and when Chuck asks what was in the box, the woman replies: "Just a satellite phone, GPS locator, fishing rod, water purifier, and some seeds. Just silly stuff."

Evil Bit
This is an old April Fool's joke, but I wanted write the post, so I could easily find it later.
The Security Flag in the IPv4 Header
Request for Comments: 3514
RFC 3514 The Security Flag in the IPv4 Header 1 April 2003 The bit field is laid out as follows: 0 +-+ |E| +-+ Currently-assigned values are defined as follows: 0x0 If the bit is set to 0, the packet has no evil intent. Hosts, network elements, etc., SHOULD assume that the packet is harmless, and SHOULD NOT take any defensive measures. (We note that this part of the spec is already implemented by many common desktop operating systems.) 0x1 If the bit is set to 1, the packet has evil intent. Secure systems SHOULD try to defend themselves against such packets. Insecure systems MAY chose to crash, be penetrated, etc.

Funny?
Is it just me or are these not funny? I like to pick on users as much as the next IT professional, but so many of these sound like the urban legends of the IT world.
I'm trying to come up with some funny stories of my own, but I'm struggling. I remember the lady that set her coffee on top of our AS/400, but that was more cringe inducing than funny.
Another lady was mad because the replacement for her corded mouse, a wireless mouse, would slide off her angled keyboard tray. Sorry we couldn't bend the rules of gravity for you there. That story was more about how to deal with a difficult users. This lady was very direct and I had to be blunt/tough with her right back. That's just the way she worked.
I'll think on this some more and maybe I can recall an actual funny one.
