Cannonball Run

A new record... tech assisted:
But there was also a built-in Net Radar radar detector, a windshield-mount Escort Max 360 radar detector, an AL Priority laser jammer system and an aircraft collision avoidance system—a bit of gear usually used in airplanes to help them avoid hitting other airplanes.
And:
The car was equipped with brake light and taillight kill switches, and Toman had all of its flashy carbon fiber trim covered with silver vinyl, which he also used to change the appearance of the taillights. At first glance, the AMG looked more like a mid-2000s Honda Accord from the rear, not like a car that would be cruising at 160 mph or faster.
And:
For navigation and further police detection, they ran Waze—a popular traffic-avoiding and hazard-detecting app—on an iPad and an iPhone. For the GPS data they would later need to prove that they’d actually finished in the time they said they did, they ran two dash-mount Garmin GPS units and one of those GPS tags tracked by a third party. They also had a police scanner and a CB radio, each of which had a big whip antenna mounted at the back of the car.

Super Mario Bros. Level 4-2 - Deep Dive

This is fascinating. I knew people did speed runs, but I cannot believe the depths to which they've gone.

Half Marathon, Hams, and APRS

I ran the Strawberry Plains Half Marathon this week-end. The METERS group was out in force. They even had a big display showing the APRS data. Thanks to all the volunteers!

A Brief Pit Stop

When milliseconds count, you will go to any extreme to save them. For one F1 team, this means hiring an Olympic runner to train the pit crew. Formula 1 cars are kinda fast.

Race Matters on eBay

Harsh - Race Matters on eBay:
"The takeaway here is twofold: It's very hard to escape the world's entrenched racism, online or no. And if you're a person of color looking to get the most out of an auction on eBay, you should probably have your white friend hold your merchandise."
I do wonder if the race of the buyer made a difference.

Ragnar Relay

If I could find 11 friends and a big van, this might be fun to try one year... a 196 mile relay race from Chattanooga to Nashville. I had not realized how much of the time you would be running alone. That would be a dramatically different experience from the Buddy's Race Against Cancer this last week-end with 2,800 participants on the 5K.

NYC Marathon and Ham Radio

NYC Marathon: Cancer won’t keep this radio volunteer down - NY Daily News:
"This will be the 36th running of the five-borough marathon. Mendelsohn is the only person who has been on the course for every mile of every one of them, always in the lead vehicle. His official title is Communications Director, which means he’s in charge of 400 ham radio operators who provide the communications pathways for all aspects of the race."
That's an impressive record even if he had been healthy the whole time. I continue to be surprised at all the places ham radio pops up.

Condredge Holloway Story

I watched the Condredge Holloway Story last night.

I'm not sure this is the same highlight, but they showed one video where he was touched by all eleven players on the opposing team and still could not be stopped. Ridiculous.

Holloway gives Bear Bryant a lot of credit for being honest about the fact that Alabama was not ready for a black quarterback. The editing almost sound like being up front about that fact was a bigger deal than having a university that could accept him as the leader of their team.

Definitely worth the hour I spent to watch. Check your local listings for future showings.
