Great. Now we will have a ban on "automatic" assault cameras with high capacity SD cards. Think of the children. I can't even begin to calculate the number of children that have cameras waved in their face each day. Cameras should only be allowed to take 10 pictures and the film should have to be advanced manually! I say we start by locking up threats like Oleg Volk and Les Jones

Peelian Principles
I wasn't aware of the Peelian Principles, but I was glad to stumble across them via Atomic Nerds via Snarky Bits. It is another one of those "why didn't I think about it this way head slappers."
Sir Robert Peel's Nine Principles:
Sir Robert Peel's Nine Principles:
The basic mission for which the police exist is to prevent crime and disorder.
The ability of the police to perform their duties is dependent upon public approval of police actions.
Police must secure the willing co-operation of the public in voluntary observance of the law to be able to secure and maintain the respect of the public.
The degree of co-operation of the public that can be secured diminishes proportionately to the necessity of the use of physical force.
Police seek and preserve public favour not by catering to public opinion but by constantly demonstrating absolute impartial service to the law.
Police use physical force to the extent necessary to secure observance of the law or to restore order only when the exercise of persuasion, advice and warning is found to be insufficient.
Police, at all times, should maintain a relationship with the public that gives reality to the historic tradition that the police are the public and the public are the police; the police being only members of the public who are paid to give full-time attention to duties which are incumbent on every citizen in the interests of community welfare and existence.
Police should always direct their action strictly towards their functions and never appear to usurp the powers of the judiciary.
The test of police efficiency is the absence of crime and disorder, not the visible evidence of police action in dealing with it.

Some Mysteries Science Can't Solve
I don't know why, but I think I am about 100 times cooler (Fonzie, not temperature) when I'm mowing the lawn, wearing sunglasses, and listening to the Gourds on my iPod.
Yes, I posted this video before, but I like it so much you may see it again.

Maximus Arms
The Random Shots section of June's American Rifleman has a blurb about Maximus Arms in Gallatin, TN. From the Maximus Arms web page:
"Maximus Arms, LLC, based in Gallatin, Tennessee, is a manufacturer of custom and collectible guns. For more than 20 years we have been professional gunsmiths serving customers across the United States. In 2010, upon the request of our many customers, we began the process of designing and manufacturing our own guns. We take pride in the integrity and quality of our custom-made firearms. With so many companies cutting corners these days, we felt strongly that the time was right to make premium-quality guns right here in the United States. We use only the highest quality steel foundry-cast to our exact specifications. The components of our pistols are unrivalled in the industry. And the quality of our hand-assembly and integrity checking is beyond reproach. We know you will enjoy our guns for many years to come."I need to add a tip jar to my blog... just 1,500 one dollar tips and this could be mine.
Baofeng UV-3R: Disassembly
In the name of science, I take apart my UV-3R to see what I can learn about it. Turns out that I don't really know how to get it completely disassembled. I get stuck trying to remove the circuit board from the metal chassis.

WB4GBI 145.470 Repeater is Up
Reports of the 145.470 Repeater's demise were greatly exaggerated.
Tim updates:
Tim updates:
This afternoon, my XYL Tammy (KB4TQO) and I went to Cross Mountain and replaced the power supply on the 145.47 repeater. A few quick checks (duplex power, “desense,” and remote control function), and I am happy to report that 145.47 is back up and ready to go. I am also happy to report that *this* power supply has the provision for battery backup, which I hope to add the batteries for in the very near future. Stay tuned!
