13 Things Mentally Strong People Don’t Do

13 Things Mentally Strong People Don’t Do by Amy Morin, LCSW. She took her life experiences and turned them into a list that eventually became a book.

I think I'm pretty good at most of these. I don't assume a role as a victim (feeling sorry for myself, giving away power), but I also don't worry about things that are out of my control. I'm also good about letting the past go. I find it easy to be happy about the success of others and don't think the world owes me anything. I'm satisfied with progress instead of needing immediate results.

I'm not as good at embracing change and I'm pretty risk adverse.

Garmin Vivosmart HR Deal

So I generally like my Garmin Vivosmart HR. I'm surprised that I don't look at the data (sleep and heart rate) as much as I thought I would. I really like the smart phone notifications.

But, if you are interested, this is a great deal. I paid $130 for mine, so this saves you $30.

The links above is for the non-GPS version. For a running/GPS solution, I must say I am extremely happy with my Garmin 235 GPS watch. It would be close to being my single device solution except I don't think it would be as comfortable to sleep in.

Soylent Coffiest

I've been reading about the Soylent products and saw that they are coming out with a coffee version.

One minute is all you need

1 Minute of All-Out Exercise May Have Benefits of 45 Minutes of Moderate Exertion:
" In this new experiment, in fact, 60 seconds of strenuous exertion proved to be as successful at improving health and fitness as three-quarters of an hour of moderate exercise."

Fitness Tracker Security

Fitness trackers aren't the most secure devices around (PDF).

And this one can be jailbroken...

I'm in the market for one - didn't realize I was going to need to do a security audit as part of my evaluation.

As always, DC Rainmaker is the place to go for the feature and performance evaluations. I can't decide if I want the Vivosmart HR or if I should just upgrade my running watch to the Forerunner 235. I have the Forerunner 610 and would like to stay in the Garmin ecosystem.

Just Keep Running

Which Type of Exercise Is Best for the Brain?
"Just why distance running was so much more potent at promoting neurogenesis than the other workouts is not clear, although Dr. Nokia and her colleagues speculate that distance running stimulates the release of a particular substance in the brain known as brain-derived neurotrophic factor that is known to regulate neurogenesis. The more miles an animal runs, the more B.D.N.F. it produces."
But skip the doughnuts.

Health Sensors

I like data, but I'm not quite ready for this kit.

Internet of Things - Toothbrush

Thermostats. Fitness monitors. Even trash monitors for pay-as-you-throw to encourage recycling. This one caught me by surprise. It can report how long you brush, the zones in the mouth, and the frequency to you ... and your dentist! So next time someone says they need to brush their teeth, you can tell them there is an app for that!

Drinks at Splash Contry

Bloomberg would have fits if he saw the gigantic, unlimited refill cups they use at Dollywood's Splash Country. I'm not sure how big they are exactly, but they surely exceed the Bloomberg limits.
"Refresh yourself all season long by purchasing a Dollywood's Splash Country "Fill & Chill" Mug. With the purchase of this special mug you receive free refills all day long.
If you are splashing with us for the day, purchase a Dollywood's Splash Country Day "Fill & Chill" Mug for the day of your visit. This special mug allows you to receive free refills for the entire day at Dollywood's Splash Country.

For the best value, refresh yourself all season long by purchasing a Dollywood's Splash Country Season "Fill & Chill" Mug. With the purchase of this special mug you receive free refills all season long."
I think the Season "Fill & Chill" Mug was almost $30. Yikes. Forget the calories, my wallet couldn't take the weight loss.

I did find the technology surrounding these cups to be pretty cool. They must have a RFID chip in them as people were using self-service stations. If you had an authorized cup, it would let you refill it with any of the fountain drinks. If not, alarms sounded and the Dollywood SWAT appeared to haul you away.

Big Apple Says Bye to Big Gulp

Just like guns laws don't prevent criminals from getting guns, banning large, sugary drinks won't keep obese people from drinking lots of calories. I say let's just ban everything, but water.

Welcome to the nanny state.

Water

The article is spread out over a hundred pages to boost their hit count, so I will save you the trouble of reading The Worst Drinks for Your Body:

Drink water.

Strength

Recently a friend of my family lost an 11 year battle with cancer. At the celebration of life service, the bishop spoke of this friend's ability to savor life. He had the strength to fight the cancer and continue to do all the things he loved - support the church, the Pride of the Southland marching band, and the Boy Scouts in addition to being a father, husband, and a lawyer.

We see examples of this sort of strength all the time - including this 12 year old boy who fought cancer almost all of his life. You see the strength in the individual, but also reflected in the actions of those around them like the Marines in the story.

It gives me hope.

Running...

I've run over 100 miles this month. I will run four more tomorrow. And then on Sunday, I hope to run 26.2.
