Very Angry Men + Guns != Shootout

Very Angry Men + Guns != Shootout. That's unpossible according to the anti-gun crowd.

Got Yourself a Fancy Degree

Well, lah de dah. I bet you have a degree in Economics, too. Yes, ma'am, I do.

Job Security

More turnover in federal attorneys due to death (33) than firings (27) - that's not a lot of change given the total of 35,000 attorneys.

Bombs and Guns

Guns are worse than bombs. Via Sebastian at Snowflakes in Hell

But if someone else had a gun, then the bomb would have been worse.

Leaky Bucket

Larry Correia (Monster Hunter) speaks the truth on the economy and left:
To say that this is because we failed to raise taxes is stupid. Think of it this way. The government is like a bucket with a leaky hole in it. Throwing extra water in the bucket doesn’t fix the problem. You need to plug the hole.

#p2

I follow Miguel's Gun Free Zone blog and he posts all the crazy things that are written on the CSGV Facebook wall. The posts usually have the #p2 hashtag.

I finally broke down and looked #p2 up here. The following are not the most popular definitions, but they work for me.
This hashtag is used by socialists/communists and their sympathizers to disseminate propaganda and anti-American sentiment.

#p2 big government liberals whose main goal is to destroy the Constitution and replace it with a Marxist society.

Bad City Councilman, Bad City Councilman

Mr. Alan Schulman (Canton City Council President):

If you aren't going to address the issue of a near homicidal police officer, then I don't think you need to be talking (or whining) about anything else. And I agree with WizardPC, I don't think there is a better time or place to carry.

After hearing more about this incident, it finally clicked. I've seen that police officer...

Bullet Tax

A mayoral candidate in Baltimore wants to charge a $1 per bullet tax to reduce crime. This is dumb on so many levels. The tax would just be in the city, so drive a few miles to save $50 in taxes on a $20 box of 50 rounds. Plus, I wonder how high the round count is for a typical criminal in a year - probably lower than a couple of trips to Coal Creek for me. Lastly, how many crooks are going to do budgeting... for a convenience store hold-up, I'll put six rounds in the magazine, but for the liquor store, I better go ahead and take a few extra even though it will cut into my robbery profits.

Nothing like being Open-minded

Now you see it and now you don't, courtesy of the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence.

It's not like the guy was being a jerk. His post was well written and moderate in tone - especially compared to the original post - OMG PONIES!

Space Shuttle

I've seen this movie. It stars Bruce Willis. Yippie Ki-yay!

Expensive. Bureaucratic. Even so, I can't help but romanticise NASA and the space prgram. Sixty cool pictures of the space shuttle's history here.

Slippery Slope

I hope my iPad won't be a gateway drug to liberalism. Slim was warning me of the dangers of the Mac Cult this morning. And now I see this neat chart. The key: 58% of self-described Mac users are liberal. Hopefully, managing hundreds of Windows boxes will offset my experimentation.

Ayn Rand - Separation of Economy and State

If you can't find the time to read the relatively short 1,000 page opus that is Atlas Shrugged (or even two hours for the movie), here is short video summary of her philosophy.

Thanks to TNJeff for pointing me to the video.

Guns - A Response

I had previously posted an exchange between me and friend on Facebook discussing the topic of guns. Here is her response:
"Brick - thanks for the offer, but I think I would cry and run away at the site of a gun. Not ever interested ever. Sorry.

If God's will is for me to be gone tomorrow because I couldn't protect myself in a bad situation and the lesson that other's learn from my death is strong that I would be completely at peace with my life and the blessings that he provided along the way.

Again - this is a long time stand. Nothing recent has changed or grown my statements from last week. My statement to my husband 13 years ago was that I could never live in a home with a gun - ever.

I value my friends' opinions and everyone's rights to carry as the laws allow today. Everyone has an opinion and a right to feel safe.

Thanks for sharing everyone -"
My previous response employed the traditional tools of rhetoric (logos, pathos, and ideals). I tried to appeal to her sense of right/wrong, attempted to tug at her emotions, and reason with her.

But it is hard to argue with faith. I understand her point, but I can't believe God wouldn't want me to protect my family if I had the option. I went so far as to look for Biblical support for my stance. I found several verses and interpretations that support my view. Being fair and balanced, I searched for counter-arguments and found several including the official position of the United Methodist Church on guns. (More on that in a later post.)

I decided that I would not reply to her. I appreciate that she did, but I felt like we were just in two different places in our beliefs and faith. Neither one of us is ready to be swayed. I will continue to study this issue.

Coming out of the closet... politically.

This is why I have the blog... I don't feel comfortable discussing my politics with just anyone. I think it is part of my conservative nature that I don't want to be in anyone's face. This blog gives me an outlet and an on-line persona with which to play.

Quoting the letter that was quoted on the blog:
"I’ve just been watching the first series of Mad Men, and I’m struck by the gay guy Salvatore Romano, and how similar his behavior is to me, only I’m hiding my politics, not my sexuality. There are also the classic moments, whereby fellow believers in academia carefully try to work out if you are one of “us”. I remember one guy who heard me comment on how some architecture reminded me of something I read in The Fountainhead, which was enough to alert him. Later we went out for a drink. I remember the nervous moment (for both of us) where he finally came out and asked me, “so what are your political / economic beliefs?” I chickened out, tempered, and said, “well, perhaps more to the center than most academics” and countered, “what are yours?” Reassured, he was willing to admit to conservative leanings. Then I was willing to admit it too."
Maybe I am just more sensitive to it, but it seems that the liberals are more willing to start debates, make political statements on Facebook, and generally stir things up.

Multiculturalism Fails

From Wikipedia: "In a political context the term has come to mean the advocacy of extending equitable status to distinct ethnic and religious groups without promoting any specific ethnic, religious, and/or cultural community values as central."

I really don't have a problem with diversity, multiculturalism, or whatever you want to call it - assuming everyone brings an open mind to the table. Unfortunately, some cultures want to convert those in their host countries.

Liberals Aren't Experts on Guns

Anne gives us Chapter 217 on what liberals don't know about guns.
"On the other hand, for a homeowner who is a poor marksman, a large-capacity clip could be a lifesaver."
That's why my CZ holds 19 rounds.

Guns at Schools - Not what you might think.

New legislation to allow staff to carry guns on campus - Bill SB 0051.

The way I read the second part of this section suggests that staff with permits can carry without the special training and approval.
"This bill authorizes full-time faculty and staff at any public postsecondary institution in Tennessee, who are not otherwise prohibited by law, to carry handguns at all times on the premises of the public institution where they are employed upon receiving a directive from the head of the institution and upon completing an annual firearm training program of at least eight hours duration. In addition, this bill authorizes full-time faculty and staff at any public postsecondary institution in Tennessee who possess a valid handgun carry permit to carry handguns at all times on the premises of the public institution where they are employed."

MLK Guns

The holiday was a few days ago, but I didn't have time to post. Even Martin Luther King, Jr. felt the need to have guns as a counter to the bad guys. It is a shame that he was denied a permit because of his race. Again and again, we see how laws are applied to attack, directly or indirectly, the Second Amendment.
