KG-UV920R: The Latest

So the Wouxun web page at Andrews Communications Systems in Australia has everyone stirred up again because of these lines:
"Due Jan/Feb., 2012"
"Compare to TM-D710A!"
"Lee operated a sample KG-UV920R at the October, 2011, Hong Kong fair. Yes, this transceiver does exist, hi!"
So Ed laid hands on one a few months ago and now Lee has, too.

The next tidbit is that we should compare it to the Kenwood D710A, so others began speculating about APRS or packet modes.

As Andy Griffith said, "don't over expect". No APRS and no packet with the
920R. The radio is supposed to be finished in December. Don't look to purchase
one that's certified until February or March from what I was told.
Regards,
Ed

Baofeng UV-3R: Camo

Every since we learned that the UV-3R could be had in a rainbow of colors, people have been asking if the camouflage radio was painted or if the case was actually made up of different color plastics in the mold.

We have our answer. It is painted.

Not an Academic

This is an example of why I didn't pursue being an academic:
"The paradox is to have to speak of exteriorization without a preceding interior: the interior is constituted in exteriorization."
Well, lah de dah.

Ninja Librarians

My worst nightmare... government ninja librarians. I would have said zombies, but they have jumped the shark.

Quote of the Day

Slashdot had a post about the end of Listserv at AOL and it brings us this quote from Hatta:
"Yes. And USENET was just like web fora, except with all your forums under one powerful interface. And IRC was just like IM, except, well no IRC is exactly like IM.
Why did we need to invent twitter, web fora, and IM when we had Listserv, USENET, and IRC?"
What is old is new again.

Google Broke My Browser

For some fun, Google "tilt" and "do a barrel roll" in Firefox or Chrome.
tim I'm fully 5 hours late to this but if you haven't already, you might want to try Googling "tilt". (via @acton inter alia) #eastereggsThu, Nov 03 13:35:02 from web

NYC Marathon and Ham Radio

NYC Marathon: Cancer won’t keep this radio volunteer down - NY Daily News:
"This will be the 36th running of the five-borough marathon. Mendelsohn is the only person who has been on the course for every mile of every one of them, always in the lead vehicle. His official title is Communications Director, which means he’s in charge of 400 ham radio operators who provide the communications pathways for all aspects of the race."
That's an impressive record even if he had been healthy the whole time. I continue to be surprised at all the places ham radio pops up.
