Chinese Radio Mega List by Nate - Part I - Mobiles

Nate scours the internet for radio news and frequently posts in the comments here, sent me a super e-mail with a lot of research on some radios that I've not seen or mentioned in detail on the blog. Enjoy his work. (Most of this is from his e-mail, but I've edited it so assume any errors are mine.) Part II will contain information about several HTs.

Baojie BJ-UV55

Dual Band mobile: BAOJIE BJ-UV55 sells on AliExpress for $219. According to specs, it should be VHF 45W/UHF 35W - not bad. Same price at RadioMart.biz.

HYS TC-VU55

And like the Baofeng/Waccom/Ronson, it has another name: HYS TC-VU55. It sells for $244 here. Some close up pics here including the one below. According to this, some folks ordered and got it too.

HYS TC-VU66

Now that was old news (March 2012), now there is an upgrade, the HYS TC-VU66, with a channel knob instead of the up/down keys:

Long Delayed Echoes (LDE)

I learned something today... LDE (Long Delayed Echoes).

Baofeng UV-5R: Desk Stand on Instructables

I'm surprised I don't seem more ham radio stuff on the instructables site. Here is a desk stand for your UV-5R (or other) HT.

Baofeng UV-3R: 220 Mhz on the Mark II

Neil (W2NDG) does the expanded frequencies mod to his Baofeng UV-3R Mark II and shares his results:
"During my morning commute, my train passes south of my club’s main repeater site. Now this is on a rather high building, in one of the highest points on western Long Island, and is pretty much line-of-site for a 4-5 mile stretch of my train ride. I tested to see if I could key up our 220 machine, and it seems that the effective range was about 4 miles this morning. Now that was just keying the repeater up. I’ll have to check to see if I can actually be HEARD on it."

Multiple Displays

So the evolution of the Wii includes a second display in the Wii U console. I've often thought that TV of the future would include multiple screens. The primary screen would be reserved for the main content while the others would display data (track position, telemetry in car races; stats for football games, etc.). My parents have Comcast and the iPad app is really cool. You can view the guide on your iPad and change channels or set recordings. It is almost enough to make me sign up for Comcast again and buy an iPad. Mo screens, less problems I always say.

Green for Green

In my latest utility bill, KUB had a generous offer allowing me to support Green Power Switch Pure Solar. For a mere $8 per 50 kWh block, I can pay to have "green" power.

Seriously, why don't we let the markets work? At least this is optional compared to sending my tax dollars chasing after green solutions.

Drinks at Splash Contry

Bloomberg would have fits if he saw the gigantic, unlimited refill cups they use at Dollywood's Splash Country. I'm not sure how big they are exactly, but they surely exceed the Bloomberg limits.
"Refresh yourself all season long by purchasing a Dollywood's Splash Country "Fill & Chill" Mug. With the purchase of this special mug you receive free refills all day long.
If you are splashing with us for the day, purchase a Dollywood's Splash Country Day "Fill & Chill" Mug for the day of your visit. This special mug allows you to receive free refills for the entire day at Dollywood's Splash Country.

For the best value, refresh yourself all season long by purchasing a Dollywood's Splash Country Season "Fill & Chill" Mug. With the purchase of this special mug you receive free refills all season long."
I think the Season "Fill & Chill" Mug was almost $30. Yikes. Forget the calories, my wallet couldn't take the weight loss.

I did find the technology surrounding these cups to be pretty cool. They must have a RFID chip in them as people were using self-service stations. If you had an authorized cup, it would let you refill it with any of the fountain drinks. If not, alarms sounded and the Dollywood SWAT appeared to haul you away.

Because They Are Jealous

Game of Thrones & Maroon 4

Some pretty funny lines.

"Don't call me on at nine on Sunday nights."
"Theon Greyjoy, you were a nice boy..."
