20 Mins a Day Will Keep the Doc Away

I guess my three hour marathon training runs are overkill then.

Lifehacker: 20 Minutes a Day to Get Fit

Of course, twenty minutes may not be enough if I want to live to be 115.

Adidas adiZero Rush

Maybe my next running shoe... I really like my current Adidas shoes.

Ragnar Relay

If I could find 11 friends and a big van, this might be fun to try one year... a 196 mile relay race from Chattanooga to Nashville. I had not realized how much of the time you would be running alone. That would be a dramatically different experience from the Buddy's Race Against Cancer this last week-end with 2,800 participants on the 5K.

The Flu is for the Avians

The day before the flu hit me, I ran 11 miles at a sub 9 minute pace. More than two weeks later, I ran just 7 miles and I was almost 40 seconds per mile slower.

Technical Tactical or Tactical Technical

Having new hobbies is confusing.

After getting into guns, I've discovered that I need all things tactical: pants, boots, holsters, slings, etc.

Now that I have gotten into running, I've discovered that I need technical things: shorts, shirts, etc.

So, if I run while carrying a gun, do I need technical tactical or tactical technical?

Run and Gun

This gun stuff is pervasive. It is showing up in my runs. (And, no I did not stop my runs intentionally at these calibers. I don't think I could do it if I tried.)

One Hundred Pushups

I took the test tonight and did 17 pushups without stopping. Let's see if this plan really works.
"If you're serious about increasing your strength, follow this six week training program and you'll soon be on your way to completing 100 consecutive push ups!"
I've never had a lot of upper body strength, so I thought I would give this a try.

RunKeeper

I've been using the free version of RunKeeper for my Android phone. It uses the phone's GPS to track your progress during runs, rides, etc. It will announce your distance, time, and pace. You can adjust the frequency of the announcements. I like lots of feedback, so I get updates every quarter mile and every five minutes. It automatically uploads your data to the web where you can view it on the web page. Below is a sample of one of my activities. You can also connect with other RunKeeper users and share your activities and view theirs.

It is pretty slick for a free app. (There is a premium "Elite" version for $20/year.) Being able to easily track my runs and see what others are doing has really been a great motivator. RunKeeper gets a thumbs up from me.

Running

As I've mentioned, I've started running. I've been doing it for about two weeks and have racked up about 20 miles including participating in a 5K.

I stumbled across 10 Life Lessons from a Reluctant Runner and have to say that I agree with most everything she says.

1. The endorphinss really do make a difference - not only right after running, but I feel better all the time.
4. Last time I did any consistent running was about 7 years ago. After about 2/2.5 miles my knees would start hurting. I got some cool new kicks with the help of the guys at Runner's Market and have had almost no knee pain. It is amazing how much difference a shoe makes.

A Good Week

I bought the running shoes and actually ran more than once... 3 runs for about 3 miles on average. The last run was probably the easiest despite the heat.

I went to Coal Creek today and shot about 150 rounds of 9mm in the CZ. The only good thing I have to say about that is that no one got hurt. Even a little practice makes a lot of difference. I need to figure out how to get to the range more often.

How we warm up in the morning...

I like for the guys in my IT department to get things going in the morning by doing a little bit of physical activity. It looks something like this...

I.T.!
Fired Up!
I think winning programs have that level of excitement and enthusiasm in most of their practices.

Prepping

I've often though that one of the first things I should do as part of any "prepping" is to get in shape. Everyone talks about guns, food, flashlights, medicine, etc. I have to believe all these tools become a lot more valuable if the prepper has the energy to use them.

So, I went out and bought some running shoes. I haven't played indoor soccer for approaching two and a half years. It has been almost seven years since I was jogging on regular basis. I got home, changed, and took off running. I ran just under 3 miles in about 33 minutes. Not a bad start - all things considered.
