Race Matters on eBay

Harsh - Race Matters on eBay:
"The takeaway here is twofold: It's very hard to escape the world's entrenched racism, online or no. And if you're a person of color looking to get the most out of an auction on eBay, you should probably have your white friend hold your merchandise."
I do wonder if the race of the buyer made a difference.

No Guarantee

The Dwindling Power of a College Degree - it was never a guarantee. The last line strikes me as something we should always do: prepare for the worst and hope for the best.
"The increasingly vicious battle between left and right is, at the most basic level, a dispute over how to respond to these new rules. Republicans largely claim that the new rules will make the country richer and, in the long run, will be beneficial to everyone willing to put in the hard work. Few Democrats call for a return to record high taxes and trade barriers — after all, the free flow of cheap goods has helped many, particularly the poor. But many do want a return to the spirit of the old rules, when the government sought to make life more equal, more stable and, for some, less rewarding. The rest of us, meanwhile, should go to school, learn some skills and prepare for a rocky road."

And I'm not sure that I think it is a problem that the best nurse, plumber, or truck driver make a lot more money than the worst nurse, plumber, or truck driver.

DIY Gas Mask

For preppers or the "Occupy" crowd, a DIY Gas Mask. I guess it is really just for the "Occupy crowd/regular people."
"With Occupy protests around the country, things are heating up. With disbursement of tear gas an pepper spray by police, how are regular people able to keep safe?"

The Difference between #2A and #p2?

I could also have said the difference between us and the #OWS groups. The difference is we can answer yes. Visit Fro Design Co to see the other images in the series and to order prints.

Dave Ramsey on #OWS

I think Dave gives good advice:
"So to summarize, I’m not very impressed at the moment. I’m not impressed by your temper fit. I’m not impressed at your lack of goals and focus. I’m not impressed by the fact that the only thing I see about your movement is ignorance, immaturity and envy. Grow up—and get a job."
The whole article is here.

Flea Party (Demands) vs. Tea Party

Flea Party vs. Tea Party « Monster Hunter Nation: For a summary of what is wrong with the world today, hit Larry's link. I cannot believe the demands. Surely these are a joke. For example:
"Demand eleven: Immediate across the board debt forgiveness for all. Debt forgiveness of sovereign debt, commercial loans, home mortgages, home equity loans, credit card debt, student loans and personal loans now! All debt must be stricken from the “Books.” World Bank Loans to all Nations, Bank to Bank Debt and all Bonds and Margin Call Debt in the stock market including all Derivatives or Credit Default Swaps, all 65 trillion dollars of them must also be stricken from the “Books.” And I don’t mean debt that is in default, I mean all debt on the entire planet period."
It makes my brain hurt that anyone can even suggest that. If it weren't for Larry's commentary, I'd be dumber for having read the list of demands.

Unicorns on Facebook

The following image is making the rounds on Facebook. It comes from a PDF of several slides at Connect the Dots USA.

From Society

If you don't like that you don't have as much money as someone else, do something about it... and I don't mean whine and cry until someone gives you a hand out. Maybe you should protest.

Scary Paper

Theater Professor’s Firefly Poster Declared Threatening:
"The campus police at the University of Wisconsin-Stout deserve praise, bravery medals, and $100 gift certificates to their favorite steakhouse for ripping down theater professor James Miller's Firefly poster before it could murder any students. Oh wait—not praise and etc., but ridicule."
That Constitution thing is pretty scary, too. Maybe they can snag it and burn it while they are at it.

View From The Porch: Snitch Culture.

View From The Porch: Snitch Culture.:
"In Maryland recently, a delivery driver saw something he thought was suspicious in his cargo, and went to the police. What was the suspicious package?

One stop was receiving a delivery of several thousand rounds of ammunition, and the stop wasn't at a gun store or shooting range or police department, but at a private residence."
On a related note, I've seen stories about criminals that were caught with a gun or two and (horrors!) two hundred rounds of ammunition in their car/house. My thought, of course, is "just two hundred? He must have been coming back from the range." Two boxes of Federal Bulk 22lr from Wally World gets you over a thousand rounds.

The Six Killer Apps of Prosperity

Another intereting TED Talk...

Niall Ferguson - The Six Killer Apps of Prosperity:

1. Competition
2. The Scientific Revolution
3. Property rights
4. Modern medicine
5. The consumer society
6. The work ethic

Definitely worth 15-20 minutes of your time to listen to his discussion of why some regions have been more prosperous over time and why they may be losing that advantage now. He suggests that "we" aren't paying attention. I submit that if would read half the blogs I follow, he would know that many of us are acutely aware of the decline.

Creating the next terrorist

Linoge has good article that demonstrates the fine line between being prepared to care for yourself and for being able to launch a jihad against the unclean. As has been said before, one man's terrorist is another man's freedom loving prepper.

Maybe I should change that phrase based on the September issue of Parents magazine. The "Keep Your Family Safe" article provides a basic guide for preparing for an emergency. The suggestions include gathering flashlights, food, blankets, etc.

So maybe it should be, one man's terrorist is another kid's concerned mom.

(And a little bonus commentary here... the mother's group at my church will be hosting a local law enforcement officer who will give them advice on protecting their homes and family. I want my wife to go, just so I can find out what he recommends. I suspect he will not be arguing .40 cal vs. 9mm.)

As Effective as a No Guns Sign

Workers at an iPad factory in China are signing a no-suicide agreement. Because paper and signs stop people from committing violence to themselves or others.

Zuckerburg Thinks Using Real Names Creates a Polite Society

According to this article, Zuckerburg thinks requiring us to use our real names will make us play nice in the sandbox. Has he seen what people say using their real name? I don't argue that he has the right to determine how his business is run. I just think he is wrong.
