Wouxun KG-D901: BuyTwoWayRadios.com Demo Units

"At first glance, The KG-D901 looks almost identical to the analog KG-UV9D and KG-UV9D Plus multi-banders, with the large, color LCD display first introduced in popular KG-UV8D and now considered a standard fixture in the latest generation of Wouxun portable handheld transceivers. It has the same keypad layout found on both the 8D and 9D models and the same array of buttons on the side. It has the volume and channel knobs, TX/RX LEDs and flashlight typically found on the other Wouxun radios as well.
As soon as you turn it on, however, the similarities end. It may look and feel familiar on the outside, but this is not a typical analog Wouxun radio at all. It's digital. As a Wouxun product, the KG-D901 is something entirely new.

Key Features
Unlike the 8D and 9D, the D901 is a single band transceiver, in your choice of either a UHF or VHF version. Most of the primary features are expected, and compared to other DMR digital radios, they may not seem particularly unique. However, there is one item on the list that may give the D901 a little extra. It is noted in bold.
  • 400-470MHz UHF frequencies (UHF Model)
  • 136-174MHz VHF frequencies (VHF Model)
  • Analog and Digital Modes
  • Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) digital technology
  • Direct and Repeater Modes
  • 16 memory channel and 2 Zones
  • Built-in CTCSS/DCS signaling in analog mode
  • Text Messaging (Digital Mode)
  • All Calls, Group Calls, Select Calls (Digital Mode)
  • Scrambler Function (Analog Mode)
  • Digital Encryption
  • Microphone Modulation Setting
  • IP57 Water Resistant"
 And:
"The KG-D901 package includes one KG-D901 single band UHF or VHF two way radio (depending on your version of choice), a 7.4v, 2000mAh battery pack, belt clip, antenna, desktop charger, AC power cord, and wrist strap. The demo models we received did not include a manual, but we expect one to be in the box when the final version of the radio ships from Wouxun.
The Wouxun KG-D901 is expected to arrive early summer 2016."

        Where the Money Goes

I met a friend in DC a few years back. He worked for the Bureau of Land Management and was apologetically telling me his title as it was something like this:

        Wouxun KG-UV8E: Tri-band HT

BuyTwoWayRadios has the Wouxun KG-UV8E tri-band HT:
"The KG-UV8E is based on the very popular Wouxun KG-UV8D, the dual band portable handheld radio best known for its large color display, cross band repeat capability and true simultaneous two band reception, all at a very low price point. At the moment of its introduction in 2014, the KG-UV8D was an instant hit, and it is still the handheld of choice among many hams today.

However, the 2 meter and 70cm bands are becoming crowded, and many hams are moving to the 1.25 meter band for some breathing room. The problem? There aren't a lot of 1.25 meter radios out there, and the ones that are available tend to swap the beloved 2 meter band for it. This means amateurs had to choose between a dual bander with either 1.25m VHF and UHF, or 2m VHF and UHF. If you used a handheld for both, you either had to carry two dual band radios, or give up a VHF band altogether.

The solution? Wouxun created a portable handheld that includes all three. It's the KG-UV8E, and it's available now from Buy Two Way Radios!"
        In short:
"The Wouxun KG-UV8E has all the same features of the KG-UV8D along with the feature upgrades of theKG-UV8D Plus. In fact, for all intents and purposes, it is a UV8D Plus, with the addition of one extra band for full transmit and receive on 1.25 meters from 222Mhz to 225Mhz."
You can pick one up for $139.99.

Full spec sheet is here (PDF).

Hytera RD965 - Tactical DMR Repeater Project

Hytera RD965 - Tactical DMR Repeater Project:
In testing UHF DMR in simplex mode, I found on typical terrain or on road convoys, the DMR radios gave us approx 2-3x the distance and had many fewer coverage holes in a given set of terrain. Another anecdote, from the basement of my house in Fort Collins, I can hit the Boulder area DMR-MARC repeater, using a HT, in DMR mode. This is pretty amazing considering the distance and stuff in the way. On analog UHF, I am lucky to hit the local Fort Collins (Horsetooth) repeater from the exact same position.

Only problem, the DMR repeaters Kent deals with are fixed position enterprise-level units, and the "manpack" repeaters he builds are typically built around ultra low power VHF/UHF. So I did a bunch of research online and found the Hytera RD965 repeater. It's small, a little larger than an old Hayes Courier HST modem. The downside compared to the other manpack repeaters was going to be its power requirements. I said that I didn't mind if we needed to have more batteries or solar panels, so we just went ahead with the project.

The idea is that we ID the best mountain-top position for the repeater to give maximal coverage of the event area, drive/hike it up there, and then leave it there for about to two weeks, until we're done with the site. The repeater is to run autonomously during that time.
Click the link for the full details (including pics) of the solution.

        DV4Mobile: VA3XPR Hands On

"To recap, the radio will operate on the 2m (144 – 148 MHz), 1.25m (222 – 225 MHz) and 70cm (430 – 450 MHz) bands and will initially supporting DMR, D-STAR and C4FM (System Fusion) digital voice modes when it is released in Q4 2016. With subsequent software updates 2017, the radio will also support P25, dPMR, NXDN and NEXEDGE. Since the radio is essentially a Software Defined Radio (SDR), it can easily be programmed to support any new digital voice modes that hams might want to use."
        And:
"So now for the big question – what will such an awesome radio cost? At the time of this article, the Wireless Holding team was reluctant to provide pricing information, as they had not finalized pricing details. So users will have to stay tuned for these details in late 2016. It is important to note that Wireless Holdings expects that an optional feature to be made available at the time of launch that would enable the radio to also operate on the HF bands, thereby making the radio compact SDR choice for anyone looking to use HF in their vehicle."

I saw this multiple places, but Cale's note popped up first on my radar.

        Vivosmart HR Update

So after about a week, I can't say that I love my Garmin Vivosmart HR fitness tracker. It just doesn't seem to be that accurate.

        Sleep
It says I got 10 hours of sleep last night. Ha. I went to bed at 11:30 PM and got up at 5:00 AM to run. I took it off around 8:00 PM to wash some dishes and somehow that was recorded as sleep.

        Heart Rate
I thought it was reading high on both my resting and running heart rate. I did a track workout yesterday and it had my heart rate at 200 bpm for a lot of it.

I'm going to try some of the recommended troubleshooting (tighten the band, swap arms, move it up the arm, have it face the inside the wrist, etc.), but I really wanted it to just work.

        Phone Notifications
The phone notifications are a nice. I didn't think I would care, but there is some value in being able to glance at my wrist and not pull the phone from my pocket.

        Vivosmart HR Plus GPS

        Timing...

So, I just bought the Vivosmart HR and today they announce the Vivosmart HR+ - basically the same fitness tracker, but now with a built-in GPS. I'm not sure if I would want to spend the extra $100 to get the GPS functionality. I'd have to think about it, but, shooting from the hip, I'd save that money to spend on the Forerunner 235.

If you want the Vivosmart HR+, you can pre-order it at Amazon.

        DV4mobile

In a similar vein as the NEW RADIO post earlier... DV4mobile:
"DV4mobile - first all mode digital tri band transceiver plus LTE with GPS

        - The DV4mobile supports all digital modes: no need for multiple radios, saving space and money.
        - It is programmed from the cloud: no need for programming and updating code plugs.
        - It is a software defined radio: future modes are just an update away.

The DV4mobile is another member of the successful family of DV4 products.
It operates in the 2 meter band, at 222 MHz and the 70cm band.
All modes are supported: C4FM, D-Star, DMRplus, dPMR, P25 (NXDN later via software update)Voice over LTE and of course, FM!
C4FM both narrow and wide band modes
        D-Star (DCS,CCS,REF,XRF,XLX)
DMRplus (TS1 all / TS2 Reflectors or talkgroups)
dPMR(All Systems and codecs transparent mode)
P25(Phase 1 Only and all NAC transparent mode)
FM with PL and DCS tones and RDS for call sign transmission in the background
DV4LTE is a new voice over LTE mode that connects the radio to the reflector using an LTE connection.
The LTE modem connects to the CCS7 reflector system supplying codeplugs in the cloud, there is no need to program codeplugs any more. Any changes in the network, be it on the reflector, repeater or user side are instantly updated. Private settings such as local channels can be maintained on the web.

When no repeaters are in range, the radio can revert to LTE (DV4LTE) for reflector connection (i.e. between metropolitan areas)
The GPS module provides location data for APRS and automatic display of repeaters in range. When a repeater is selected, frequency and mode is already in the radio, no programming!

The DV4mobile can also be used as a dual band, dual mode simplex repeater.
For example you can use it as a D-Star repeater on 2m and simultaneously as a DMR repeater on 70cm while conducting FM QSO on 222 MHz (USA version only)"

        Specs:

And perhaps a fitting comic to accompany the above:

        NEW RADIO

        What a terrible name... NEW RADIO - a dual-band, multi-mode radio to support DMR, D-STAR and C4FM:
"a new dual-band, multi-mode mobile radio called the “NEW RADIO” that will operate on the 2m & 70cm bands and support the most common ham digital modes, including DMR, D-STAR and C4FM (System Fusion), plus analog FM. As reported in the article, the NEW RADIO has been created by hams for the ham radio community will feature a colour touch screen display, 50W of power output, a 1.8 GHz processor, a Linux operating system, plus dual AMBE+ vocoders, allowing for full-duplex, cross-band operation. Also, one of the biggest features of the NEW RADIO is that it will include a built-in LTE wireless modem and SIM card allowing it to be Internet connected while on the go."

        And maybe an HT version.

I'm putting this all on the wait and see list.

        Workouts

After my last post, many* of you asked about my workouts. Here are a couple of examples:

A video posted by Jalen Hurd (@jayhurd1) on

        * Many = none

        Fitness Friday

Lots of things in the fitness arena converging today...

        Running
Bad news for us older folks... the data shows a strong correlation between age and decline in speed:

By age 35, the rates of decline are so predictably linear that this calculator by a Yale economics professor maps out just how slowly you can expect to run the same distance as the years run by.

        https://fairmodel.econ.yale.edu/aging/runoth.htm
The good news is that I don't think I've hit my peak yet, so I hope to keep seeing improvements for some years yet.

        Cross Training
I've built a fairly large collection of dumbbells that my wife and I use to workout at home. I think something like these Bowflex SelectTech 552 Adjustable Dumbbells would be a good supplement to our home gym. It would keep us from replicating all the weights and definitely would save space. (Our family room is also our gym.)

        Fitness Tracker
I bit the bullet and after a small USPS delay, I have a Garmin Vivosmart HR fitness tracker. It monitors the usual steps and stairs, but I bought it for the heart rate monitor and sleep tracker. In addition to tracking my heart rate throughout the day, it will link to my Garmin GPS watch and share the heart rate information. I've only done that once - it's a little more awkward wearing the two devices than I expected.

The sleep monitoring is cool. I feel like I don't get a lot of quality sleep and I know I get up a lot. I'll have the data to back that up now.

        The Other Chirp

Google's alternative to the Amazon Echo is code-named Chirp. I'm pretty excited for competition in this space. Tools like these should drive some innovation in the integration of all my IoT devices. And, yes, I'm sure everything will be designed with security at a priority.

        WB4GBI Repeater Problems

Not really repeater problems, but people problems:
"I'm sure most of you know by now that the repeater has been off the air since early Friday Morning. I was on vacation last week, and some incidents that happened while I was away left me choice but to ask my control operators to shut it down until I returned.

I do not like to leave the repeater off. I do not like to "punish" the vast majority of great amateur radio operators that use and enjoy my repeaters the way I wanted my "labor of love" to be used and enjoyed. However, as I have mentioned before, this is my license and my investment of time and dollars that are on the line. In order for that investment to be preserved, and enjoyed properly, I am in the final process of publishing an "Acceptable Use Policy" (AUP). This document, which will be published on my website (www.wb4gbi.com), will specifically detail what is permissible and what is not when using any of my 14 repeaters. I regret having to resort to this method, but everyone will be able to read, understand, and know the policies of being a "guest in my house actually means." Think of it as what would be expected of you if you were a long-term guest in someone else's residence. In essence, when you use someone else's repeater, that is exactly what you are doing.

Until this document is published, the repeater will remain off the air. The final version of the AUP document is being edited and revised by several parties. I expect to have it ready to publish in the next few days. There will be a downloadable PDF file available as well. If you have any questions or concerns, please email me personally.

Progress: Tennessee Campus Carry Becomes Law Without Haslam Signature

        Podcasts

I mowed the lawn and did a bunch of yard work, so I got to listen to a couple of podcasts this week-end.

First, the BuyTwoWayRadios guys ask if there is too much tech in the radios. I say no - as long as all the features don't get in the way of the basic functionality. With a minimal amount of fumbling around, the average ham should be able to get a radio on the air without having to read the entire manual. (Smart phones should be the same way. The average person should be able to do some basic tasks like making a call or texting without having to invest a lot of time learning a new interface.)
