Ham Radio - Make my computer talk to your computer

My father-in-law has been a ham for 50+ years. When talking about packet or digital modes, he often remarks that he doesn't want to make "my computer talk to your computer."

Gary Hoffman, KB0H, takes that idea to its logical conclusion:
"What if I died? Would anyone actually notice? My website would still be there. People might still send me e-mail. Various answering machines would still respond with my voice. The APRS station in my shack would keep on pumping out my call sign.

None of those machines was me, of course. They weren’t alive. They didn't have personalities."

HP Touchpad & Nook Color Update

Too bad I couldn't find a $99 HP Touchpad, since the Android port is coming. Obviously, that would have been cheaper than my Nook Color Android.

Paul points out that the Nook Color can be had from the BN ebay store (Item: 120758870326) for $180 with free shipping. Also, he links to the XDA forum for hacking the Nook Color.

Nook Color & Nook 2 Android

I really like our iPad. The three of us seem to share it pretty well, but I was already thinking we could really be a two or three tablet family. My uncle is trying out a Nook Color, the Barnes & Noble ebook reader along with a little hack to run the Android OS via a bootable microSD card from Nook 2 Android.

You can pick up a new Nook Color for $250. I got a refurb on Buy.com for $180. You can then order the a Nook 2 Android 8 GB card for $35. So on the cheap side, you can get an Android tablet for $215 plus shipping.

I'm excited about this as I really wanted a tablet and I think this will be a great device. I want it to be my portable documentation repository and library. Dropbox plus some PDFs. YouVersion for multiple versions of the Bible. Add Google Reader for my RSS feeds and I am all set!

Ditto.

Linoge has done it again. We need to match him up with some of these antis in a debate club showdown. (The first rule of debate club...) I hope if I keep reading his stuff, I will become wiser and more eloquent. For now, I will leave it at... ditto!

A long read, but well worth the time and it will get your neurons firing:
why are they so eager to expose their bigotry?

My friend bought some sort of revolver, so that it would be his turn to make the person in the next lane jump because of his "hand cannon." He said he was going to e-mail me a picture to compare with a 9mm round, but all he sent was this photo of a 9mm round next to a metal thermos.

So you are telling me there's a chance!?!?

Navigating The Nutnfancy Project

One complaint I have about the Nutnfancy Project is the huge number of videos he has. It is almost too much of a good thing - which could probably be said about the length of some of his videos, too. (Up next: 45 Minutes of Part 7 of Tactical Socks for Urban Wear during Warm Seasons in a ROL Scenario!) He makes an attempt to address the massive catalog in this video, but I really think a simple web page with an index would get him even more views. Clearly, he is doing something right since he has over 75M upload views, but there is always room for improvement.

KG-UV920R

Ed of Wouxun.us responds to this thread about the "as of yet missing in action" KG-UV920R mobile rig from Wouxun:
"If it was a hoax, it was a nice looking one that weighed about 3 pounds. Last October, I held it in my grubby little hands, turned its knobs, took its picture, even tried to sneak it into my bag, so it did exist. I have my theory as to why it hasn't made it to market but I'll keep that to myself. If it's at the show this October, I'll let you know.

Pictures added to the Photos section.

Ed

www.Wouxun.US"

Below is one of the pics he posted. (Join the Yahoo Group if you want to see the other one.) I think the mobile rig will appear. I am guessing that they have run into some technical challenges, supply chain issues, cost problems, or all of the above that has delayed its arrival. Even if it never shows up, I would not assume it was because the KG-UV920R was a hoax. I think Hanlon's Razor applies.

EMP

Posting about the Faraday Bags reminded me of a book I read last summer: One Second After. (It was the summer of the post-apocalyptic stories as I also read On The Beach and Alas, Babylon. Nothing like some sunshine, sand, and stories about the end of the world to make for a pleasant vacation.)

One Second After describes the events after an EMP has completely disrupted modern life. With all electronics (including those in cars, computers, communications equipment, appliances, etc.) rendered useless, the supply chain quickly breaks down. When you have JIT inventories, your supply quickly goes to zero when the next truck or train doesn't arrive. Low inventories is great for cash flow, but not so hot for being prepared to survive without weekly trips to the fully stocked grocery store and pharmacy. Food becomes scarce as do medications including common place antibiotics and maintenance drugs like insulin.

In this disaster scenario, communications are down - most of the "when all else fails" ham radio gear included. Matt @ AmateurRadio.com gets to the heart of the matter:
"Amateur Radio is depended upon “when all else fails.” Ham radio operators pride themselves on their “readiness, resilience, and response.” Well prepared hams have their 72-hour Go Kits, extra batteries for their fancy HTs, etc. But what if the emergency involves some sort of EMP attack? Are you ready to provide emergency communications for your community when your solid-state HF and VHF transceivers have been rendered useless boat anchors?"
I am in no way prepared for an EMP attack or even most natural disasters. My goal is to keep chipping away at being prepared by making baby steps over time - first aid supplies in the cars, extra flashlights and batteries, radios and batteries, water, food, blankets, binoculars, fire making kits, etc.

While being able to communicate with a community or across a nation, doesn't by itself solve the issues of disease and hunger, it could go a long way in providing hope. And hope might just keep society a little more civilized.

Back to the book... it isn't high art by any stretch, but it is a good read and extremely thought provoking if not downright scary.

One Second After

Signs

WizardPC is on a roll at his new blog - Guns, Cars, and Tech. While covering some familiar territory, he hits on a key point:
"I’ve had business owners tell me that posting reduces their liability. It doesn’t:

(d) Nothing in this section shall be construed to alter, reduce or eliminate any civil or criminal liability that a property owner or manager may have for injuries arising on their property."
So let's play a little logic game.

Why do businesses exist? To ensure our safety? No. To make money.

To make money, businesses cannot lose money. So, to protect themselves from lawsuits, they post signs prohibiting guns on the premises.

Except Section D above says they don't get any protection from doing that.

Therefore, if they post a sign, they don't mitigate the risk from lawsuits AND they alienate gun owning customers, therefore reducing their profit.

So it is only logical that business should not post signs prohibiting guns.

And I would like to add that...

Guns don't kill people. People kill people.
And signs don't save people. People save people.

Google Android Ham Radio: The Golf Oscar Oscar Golf One Echo

A fun exercise... what if Google made a ham radio? It is like when I dream about winning the lottery. The G00G1E? I'm sure it would be better than the dual-band P-A-968 Cell Phone. In the Baofeng UV-3R, we've seen that basically a decent SDR can be crammed into a small package. Apple is probably the best at developing the slickest form factor. (Heck, they are even suggesting that we should cut our plugs in half to help slim down our devices. Maybe that would save room for a better antenna.) But, if anyone could pull something wild like this off, it would be Google. All it takes is a couple of Googlers that are hams to take a crazy notion and who knows what could happen. They are all millionaires and could spend a few bucks on a pet project. ;)

I like Rich's suggestions for several features: DSP filtering, CTCSS, APRS, Echolink, and a D-Star alternative codec.

I say bring on PSK31 and a waterfall!

Plug link via Slashdot.org

It is like 9mm, but for rifles!

Since Nutnfancy ended the debate about the best caliber for a handgun, we can now move on to rifles:
"The .223 Rem. is a great cartridge. If you understand its limitations and versatility it is indeed a great one-gun choice. I know it's what I would choose. If the situation arose where I needed a bigger gun, I'd just borrow one."
So to summarize, don't get the largest round and don't get the smallest either. Something in the middle is the best in most situations.

Poor Judge-ment

Man drives car.
Gun slides around.
Man grabs gun.
Man shoots self.

Gary Varvel - Cartoons/Social Commentary

I got one of those e-mails that makes the rounds with "funny" stuff in it. One of the cartoons (see below) did jump out at me, so I tracked the creator down - Gary Varvel. (A minor complaint - I couldn't find an RSS feed for his updates, so I had to follow him on Twitter.) Also, I couldn't find this particular image on his site or anywhere else, so no direct linky. Lots of good stuff from him, so be prepared to spend at least a few minutes browsing around.

Well, before I posted this, I did find an RSS feed for him at Creators.com. I'm going to watch the feed and Twitter to make sure they have the same content.

Adam at Equip 2 Endure reviews some Faraday bags designed to protect your electronic gear from EMP damage. The bags are by Tech Protect.

One more item for my shopping list if I ever get serious about prepping. While important, food and water might be higher on the list.

Baofeng UV-3R: Yellow!

Thanks to a comment on the earlier post, I see that the yellow version is now available at the 409Shop.com.

Given the note about quality concerns, I will probably wait until one of the US resellers has it. I don't mind paying a few bucks more to get support and don't desperately need one this minute. I'm still not sure why the color would impact the functionality. Maybe it was just a bad batch.

Rule 1

Tam reminds of us of why we have Rule 1.

I'm famous.

Okay, not really, but some positive reinforcement is always nice.

My site got mentioned in this eHam.net review of the UV-3R.

And my post about the KG-6DUV was linked on Amateur Radio.com.

I never intended for this to become a Baofeng UV-3R dominated blog, but you just have to go with the flow sometimes.

Creating the next terrorist

Linoge has good article that demonstrates the fine line between being prepared to care for yourself and for being able to launch a jihad against the unclean. As has been said before, one man's terrorist is another man's freedom loving prepper.

Maybe I should change that phrase based on the September issue of Parents magazine. The "Keep Your Family Safe" article provides a basic guide for preparing for an emergency. The suggestions include gathering flashlights, food, blankets, etc.

So maybe it should be, one man's terrorist is another kid's concerned mom.

(And a little bonus commentary here... the mother's group at my church will be hosting a local law enforcement officer who will give them advice on protecting their homes and family. I want my wife to go, just so I can find out what he recommends. I suspect he will not be arguing .40 cal vs. 9mm.)

Quote of the Day

Bruce Pearl is selling his house. His quote is priceless.

Emphasis is mine.

Machine Gun Clips

Tonight when my daughter was eating her chicken noodle soup, my wife was picking out the celery pieces, because the little one doesn't like them. It reminded me of when I was little and my parents got me and my brother to eat them by calling them "machine gun clips." I guess the curved shape reminded us of an AK-47 we had seen on TV or in a movie. Silly, huh? I know. They should have called them "modern sporting rifle magazines."

Baofeng UV-3R: Softcase

Richard, PA5RR, has found a softcase for the UV-3R on ebay. I'm not a fan of cases for my HT's, but I know lots of people are, so I'm glad there is a UV-3R specific solution.

Baofeng UV-3R: Mellow about Yellow

So much for getting a yellow one soon... per a comment from Chris (NH7QH Radio Supplies, LLC / www.baofeng-us3r.us) in my post about a US UV-3R reseller:
"I will be bringing in the color units soon with the exception of yellow not passing QA."
Oh well. Maybe a red one then?

The Motherload of Ham Radio Study Guides

Based on a comment from KD0BIK about his plan to start studying for his Extra license, I tracked down the course information.

Check out this download link from SouthCARS - for each license course, they have all the documents in one convenient place. For example, the Extra Class course has the questions pool, the syllabus, HF Band Chart, Diagrams for the test, All Ham Band Chart, and KY6V's "Let's Start with the Basics" document. Oh, and there are 12 podcasts of the actual class in case you missed any or cannot listen during the live event.

Between the ARRL Extra Class License Manual and all the free resources, I have no excuse for sticking with the General License.

KG-UV6D: Evolution of the KG-UVD1P

Ed at Wouxun.us has had a note published for a long time (see pic below) that "2.5 KHz Tuning Step Soon To Be Added." And, now Steve, the moderator of the Wouxun Yahoo group, has this to say:
"Wouxun seems to be finalizing an enhanced version of the KG-UVD1p, a KG-UV6D. The current UV 2 and 3 models are generally considered as slight variations of the UVD1p model including slight case cosmetics and/or a software feature or two. Having a chance to see the draft manual of the new model a couple features come to mind. The KG-UV6D, among other features, includes the 2.5khz frequency step, 199 channels, and boot up message ability. The case form factor is very similar to the current model.

I am not certain of the expected release or availability dates for this new version. Perhaps one of the "Ed's" wants to chime in."
Emphasis is mine to point out the changes. Anyone surprised that we would see this before the mobile?

Technical Tactical or Tactical Technical

Having new hobbies is confusing.

After getting into guns, I've discovered that I need all things tactical: pants, boots, holsters, slings, etc.

Now that I have gotten into running, I've discovered that I need technical things: shorts, shirts, etc.

So, if I run while carrying a gun, do I need technical tactical or tactical technical?

The US Government Family Budget

Attributed to Dave Ramsey:
"If the US Government was a family, they would be making $58,000 a year, they spend $75,000 a year, & are $327,000 in credit card debt. They are currently proposing BIG spending cuts to reduce their spending to $72,000 a year. These are the actual proportions of the federal budget & debt, reduced to a level that we can understand."
Why is this so hard to understand? No wonder the S&P downgraded the US long term debt.

From the Everything Has a Cost and Unintended Consequences Files

3D is the next big thing™. I don't actually believe that. For me, it was fun to see the first time at Disney World in some of their shows, but I don't need something to jump out at me every few minutes just because the show is in 3D. I got a lot bigger thrill in going from a 2D to a 3D advanced graphics card (the FPS went through the roof!) when I was playing Quake 2 oh so many years ago. And HD TV has been a great move up.

There are people who are betting a lot of money on 3D in movies and on TV, but here is where it gets fun.

So "the advent of 3D projectors is severely cutting the amount of light that reaches the screen because projectionists are not changing out the 3D lenses for 2D screenings as they should." Using the wrong lenses creates sub-optimal 2D pictures. If you read the article, it goes on to say that they have put so many controls in place that it makes it difficult to make the swap between movies. They are afraid that the bad guys are going to rip them off, so they spend lots of effort to make things difficult - on the evil-doer and the guy who has to support the projector.

The article sums it up this way:
"So in this case, Hollywood's threat model of losing revenues through unauthorized copying and redistribution overpowered its *other* threat model of losing business to home entertainment systems and Blu-Ray. At the projector level, I'd have thought the latter was the worse threat."
I think our default position for so many things in our lives is to make them more secure, but given our inability to evaluate risk, we often create more problems than we solve. I preach it at work and home - keep things simple. Some complexities are required, but others we impose upon ourselves.

Game of Thrones for Dummies

Spoilers a plenty if you've not read the book and/or seen the series. Mildly entertaining and mostly correct - worth the watch if you are struggling to keep all the players straight.

What does it mean to be rich?

Trent from the Simple Dollar talks about it in terms of abundance and scarcity, but I like Oleg's take better:
"Sometimes, I am rich. Not always, but I was rich yesterday. I had more of what I wanted than I actually needed — my sole constraint being the 24/7 limit of available time shared by all. I had more storage capacity in the camera and props than I could photograph in a day, more ammunition than I could shoot in the range time I have, more perfectly ripe watermelon and fancy chocolate than I could eat, more good friends than I could see all at once or in turn."

Three Percenters

From Ambulance Driver:
"It is estimated that only 3% of American colonists took up arms against England. Only 10% of American colonists actively supported the fighters with arms, munitions and materiel. Only 20% or so of their neighbors even supported their cause at all. Fully a third of the American colonists considered themselves loyal British subjects, and a third more had no strong opinions either way."
It also reminds me that I recently heard that the average giving in our church conference is about 1.5%. My church is much better at 3%. (Yes, sarcasm.) As I continue to prove, I ain't real good at the maths, but 3% is pretty far off from a 10% tithe I think.

Shipping Confirmation from Ham Radio Outlet

That was the title of an e-mail I received this morning. Something fun is on its way to Brick's shack.

Guns and Radios

I've visited AR15.com on various occasions, but until I uncovered today's post about the Baofeng UV-3R, I had no idea that they had a Ham Radio section in their forums -- including Ham Radio 101 and 57 pages of Everything You Wanted to Know About Ham Radio But Were Too Confused to Ask.

Christians

My understanding of God's message is quite different from those discussed by Ken at Popehat. It is sad when the "good" guys aren't even close to being good. I'm not close to perfect, but it is hard to believe the people can reconcile being Christian and making comments like "can we start killing them now? few groups are filled with more hatred." In this case, they are talking about atheists, but it could be directed at just about any group that doesn't match their views.

A Case for Pseudonyms

The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) makes the case for Pseudonyms. I do not fear for my life, but I still think there ought to be some separation between personal and public - on-line pseudonyms seem to be a reasonable method for maintaining that separation. If I started doing evil things with this blog, then there is a legal process for finding out who am. Not that it would be that hard given the various tidbits of personal information I've provided in my posts to track me down IRL.

Gucci Gear

I have a friend who has been there and done that in the Middle East. We were talking about AR-15's and all the equipment (lasers, range finders, flashlights, tool kits, red dots, etc.) you can put on them. He said that they had taken to calling all that stuff "Gucci Gear." That fits in well with PDB's idea of the Tactical Metrosexual.

Backson

While the rest of the world is going to see Captain America, Captain America, Captain America, and even Cowboys and Aliens, I went to see a horror movie about the fearsome Backson.

Owl: It's a Giant creature with a tail
Here I'll draw Piglet in for scale
His hide is like a shaggy rug
His face a surely ugly mug
With two sharp horns atop his head
In between a mop of hair that's red
And in his nose a ring of gold
It smells of monkey's feet and mold
Its toes are black
Its fur is blue
I swear that all I tell you is not made up
The Backson!
All: The Backson!
Owl: The Backson!
All: The Backson

My two and a half year old loved it and I thought it was pretty entertaining, too. There were several clever word plays that made me laugh. The closing credits were really cool, too.
